iPhone 17 to feature 120Hz refresh rate and larger display but keep A18 chip

The rumor mill for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 series is in full swing, and it seems the base iPhone 17 is taking a more measured approach to upgrades. While the Pro models and the speculated iPhone 17 Air might see significant advancements, the standard iPhone 17 looks set for iterative changes. This strategic move from Apple appears to be a deliberate effort to differentiate its lineup, potentially encouraging users to opt for higher-tier devices.

According to analyst Jeff Pu of GF Securities, the standard iPhone 17 will stick with the A18 chip, the same one found in the iPhone 16 base model. This chip, manufactured using TSMC’s N3E process, will position it below the A19 and A19 Pro chips expected in the iPhone 17 Air and Pro models.

These higher-end chips are rumored to utilize TSMC’s more advanced N3P process. The RAM situation also reflects this, with the iPhone 17 retaining 8GB of RAM, mirroring its predecessor. This contrasts with earlier whispers of 12GB of RAM for the Air and Pro models, suggesting a clear segmentation of performance.

However, the iPhone 17 isn’t without its notable enhancements, particularly concerning its display. Display industry expert Ross Young has consistently indicated a larger 6.3-inch screen for the iPhone 17, a noticeable increase from the iPhone 16’s 6.1-inch panel. This would bring the base model’s screen size in line with the iPhone 17 Pro.

Crucially, Young’s reports, supported by other sources, suggest the iPhone 17 will finally feature a 120Hz refresh rate, a premium feature previously exclusive to Apple’s ProMotion displays. This is a user experience upgrade, promising smoother visuals and more responsive interactions. Furthermore, the front camera is expected to see a substantial boost, jumping from 12 megapixels to 24 megapixels, which should greatly improve selfies and video calls.

Beyond the standard model, the iPhone 17 series is shaping up to be a diverse family. The rumored iPhone 17 Air, which might replace the iPhone 16 Plus, is anticipated to feature a 6.6-inch display. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to keep its expansive 6.9-inch screen.
