How to Fix iOS 27 Battery Drain on iPhone

If you’ve installed iOS 27 on an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, or iPhone 17 and noticed worse battery life, you’re not alone. Apple released iOS 27 today and battery complaints are already showing up.

That does not necessarily mean something is wrong with your iPhone. Apple’s own release notes for iOS 27 include a standard line worth remembering, that software updates “may affect performance and/or battery life.” Temporary drain is normal after major updates, and there are several safe fixes you can try right now.

Why iOS 27 may drain battery faster

After installing a major update, iPhones perform a variety of background tasks. Photos are analyzed, Spotlight reindexes content, apps update their data, and Apple Intelligence features continue processing information in the background. Siri AI adds an extra layer of on-device processing on top of that, since it draws on personal context and app actions to work.

These activities can temporarily increase power consumption, especially on devices that support Apple’s latest AI features. Battery life may fluctuate for the first few days after installation, and most users find it improves once the system finishes these tasks.

Give it 24 to 72 hours first

The safest fix is often to do nothing.

Give your iPhone one to three days to complete indexing and other background activities. Keeping the device connected to Wi-Fi and charging overnight can help the process finish more quickly.

Restart your iPhone

A simple restart can sometimes resolve abnormal battery drain caused by apps or background services.

  1. Press and hold the Side button and either volume button.
  2. Drag the power slider.
  3. Wait a few seconds and turn the iPhone back on.

Check which apps are using the most battery

You can see what is consuming power by going to:

Settings > Battery

The Battery section shows which apps have used the most energy over the last 24 hours and the last 10 days. If a particular app is behaving unusually, updating it or limiting its background activity may help.

Turn off Background App Refresh for unnecessary apps

Many apps continue checking for new content even when they are not actively being used.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Background App Refresh.
  4. Disable it for apps that do not need constant updates.

This can reduce battery usage without affecting the overall iPhone experience.

Use Low Power Mode

Low Power Mode temporarily reduces background activity and some visual effects.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Turn on Low Power Mode.

This helps while your iPhone finishes settling in after the update.

Check Battery Health before blaming iOS 27

An aging battery makes any software update look worse than it actually is. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and look at Maximum Capacity.

iPhone 15 and later models are designed to hold 80 percent capacity at 1,000 full charge cycles. If your Maximum Capacity has already dropped well below that, the battery itself is compounding whatever iOS 27 is doing, not causing it on its own.

Look for a point update if the drain doesn’t ease up

Apple typically ships a 27.0.1 or 27.1 within the first few weeks of a major release to address exactly this kind of feedback. Testers running the release candidate builds reported mixed results, with some seeing battery life snap back to normal and others seeing it worsen again right before launch, so a point update is worth checking for if things haven’t settled after several days.

To check for updates:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.

Avoid resetting your iPhone unless necessary

Factory resetting your iPhone is unlikely to solve most update-related battery issues. In many cases, the same background indexing process simply starts again after restoring the device.

Unless you are experiencing severe problems, waiting a few more days is usually the better option.

Should you worry about iOS 27 battery life?

Probably not.

Battery drain is one of the most common complaints right after a major iOS release, and most cases improve within a week as the system finishes its background work. iOS 27 also brings broader performance changes that Apple says can make supported iPhones feel faster and more responsive once that settles.

iOS 27 supports every iPhone back to the iPhone 11 and the second-generation iPhone SE, with Siri AI limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and newer.
