Apple has officially unveiled iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, at the “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9. This is the biggest structural change to iPhone since it launched in 2007, and Apple didn’t treat it like a science experiment bolted onto iOS. Every part of it, from the titanium hinge to the way Siri sits next to your content, was built around the fold.
Here’s the full breakdown of what iPhone Duo actually is, what it costs, and when you can get one.
Design: thinnest iPhone ever, closed like a passport
Opened, iPhone Duo is the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever made. Closed, it’s about the size of a passport. The enclosure is grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, and the hinge cover is 3D-printed titanium with a contrasting micro-blasted texture.
The hinge itself is built from more than 100 components. It supports the center of the display so the phone lies flat when open, and an integrated magnet array gives it a satisfying, secure close. Apple also added support ribs and ceramic fiber inserts around the antenna splits to stiffen the frame.
Durability was clearly a priority. Ceramic Shield covers the back, and the front carries Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says scratches three times less than the previous generation. iPhone Duo is also IP68 rated for water, dust, and splash resistance, and the inner display gets its own scratch-resistant coating plus a nano-textured cover layer built from a custom polymer that’s up to 40 percent stiffer than materials used elsewhere in the industry.
Two Super Retina XDR displays, one aspect ratio
Closed, you get a 5.4-inch outer display, roughly 90 percent of the screen area on iPhone 18 Pro. Open it up and the inner display grows to 7.6 inches, about 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple matched the aspect ratio across both screens so content scales cleanly instead of stretching or cropping when you switch between them.
Both displays run ProMotion, support Always-On, and hit 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. The inner panel uses a nano-texture finish that cuts glare and, just as importantly, makes the crease far less noticeable. Underneath it sits a new FaceTime camera that stays completely hidden until you actually need it, so nothing interrupts the screen. Apple Pencil support is coming to iPhone Duo later this year over USB-C.
A20 Pro and a dual-battery design built for two screens
iPhone Duo runs the same A20 Pro chip found in iPhone 18 Pro, but it’s paired with a chip package inspired by Apple’s M-series silicon that connects A20 Pro directly to a custom vapor chamber. The result is up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro. The 6-core CPU is up to 20 percent faster than A19 Pro, the 7-core GPU is up to 40 percent faster and more efficient, and the new dual 16-core Neural Engine doubles on-device AI performance. Memory bandwidth is up 50 percent, and the whole chip is built on a 2-nanometer process.
Battery life comes from a dual-battery architecture, one cell on each side, working together through energy rebalancing algorithms. Apple rates it at up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, up to 44 hours on the outer display, and up to 24 hours with mixed use of both. It supports fast charging too, up to 50 percent in around 20 minutes wired, or around 30 minutes wirelessly with MagSafe or Qi2.
A camera system that actually uses the fold
The rear camera system pairs a 48MP Fusion Main camera, with an integrated optical-quality 2x telephoto and zero shutter lag, with a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera for wider shots and macro photography. That Ultra Wide sensor is the same one used on iPhone 18 Pro. A new computational image pipeline handles detail, and sensor-shift optical image stabilization keeps low-light shots steady.
Where the Duo gets genuinely interesting is what the second screen unlocks. Smart Take uses on-device AI running on A20 Pro to watch the scene in real time and fire the shutter the moment everyone is actually posing. Duo Preview shows subjects a live view on the outer display so they can check their own framing. Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations on the outer screen to get toddlers looking at the camera. And Duo FaceTime lets someone standing nearby join a call using the outer display and its camera, no crowding around one screen required, while Dual Capture streams the front and rear cameras into a call simultaneously.
Video gets a real bump too. iPhone Duo shoots 4K120fps in Dolby Vision on the main camera for slow motion, applies Cinematic effects after capture at up to 60fps, and Time-lapse now supports 4K Dolby Vision HDR. Audio Mix picks up new algorithms for cleaner voice isolation and can now isolate music separately. You can also prop the Duo up on its own and record longer clips without a tripod.
iOS 27, rebuilt around the hinge
Apple didn’t just stretch the interface across more pixels. Controls, the Dock, and app navigation now sit along the side of the screen to free up vertical space, and the Dynamic Island has been redesigned to fit vertically into the corner on both displays. Open the phone and you get two Home Screen pages, with a scrolling Today View of widgets on the left.
Split View lets you run two apps side by side on iPhone for the first time, or open two windows of the same app, Safari being the obvious example for comparison shopping. You can swap apps quickly, save pairs of apps to come back to later, and keep a conversation going with Siri on one side of the screen while working in something else on the other.
StandBy gets a proper upgrade as well. Set the Duo down, on either display, even without charging, and it becomes a photo frame, a widget hub, or a clock, with new Calendar and Weather faces joining the existing options and the Photos face now able to show Shared Albums.
Apple Intelligence and the new Siri
iPhone Duo ships with access to Siri AI, Apple’s rebuilt version of Siri rolling out in beta with iOS 27. It draws on personal context across your messages, emails, and photos, understands what’s on your screen to take action directly, and answers general questions using broader web knowledge. There’s a dedicated Siri app now too, with conversation history synced privately through iCloud.
Apple Intelligence also picks up new photo tools, Spatial Reframing, Extend, and an upgraded Clean Up, along with photorealistic Image Playground generations that will support the SynthID watermarking standard. In Safari, a new Notify Me feature can watch a page for you and alert you when something changes, like a restock or a price drop. All of it runs through on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute, so Apple’s privacy approach carries over from the rest of the iPhone lineup.
Connectivity: eSIM everywhere, and mmWave finally comes to the modem
iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide, freeing up internal space for the dual battery setup. eSIM is now supported by more than 500 carriers globally, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, and iOS 27 introduces iPhone Handoff, letting you move your number between two iPhones without a carrier call.
Apple’s own N1 chip handles Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, while the C2 modem adds AI-driven improvements to cellular reliability and finally brings mmWave support to the US.
Price, storage, and accessories
iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the US for 256GB, or $83.29 a month over 24 months, and goes up through 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations. It comes in two colors, star white and night sky. Apple is also offering it through Apple Upgrade, a new leasing program run with Klarna, starting as low as $57.99 a month over 24 months.
Two accessories launch alongside it. The iPhone Duo Folio ($129) comes in navy blue and taupe with a built-in kickstand that tucks away when you don’t need it. The iPhone Duo Case ($79) comes in sand and navy blue, wrapping both halves of the device while staying compatible with MagSafe and Qi2 charging.
Release date and where it’s launching
Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on Friday, October 16, with the phone hitting shelves on Friday, October 23. The first wave covers more than 70 countries and regions, including the US, UK, UAE, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, India, and Canada, with 28 additional markets following on October 30. iPhone Duo ships running iOS 27.1.
Apple Intelligence itself arrives more broadly with iOS 27 on September 14, and Siri AI enters beta the same day for English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish following in October.

John Ternus, Apple’s CEO, called iPhone Duo “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original,” and for once that’s not just launch-day marketing. Apple spent years watching Samsung and Google ship foldables while it stayed quiet, and the wait shows up in the details: a hinge with over 100 parts, a display coating built specifically to hide the crease, camera features that only make sense because there are two screens, and an iOS layout that was actually redesigned rather than stretched.
At $1,999 to start, it’s priced well above the rest of the iPhone lineup, and the real test starts once it’s in people’s pockets rather than on a stage.
