Portal Opens a Window to Nature When You Unfold the iPhone Duo

Portal, the nature scenes app with more than 100 places to escape to, now supports the iPhone Duo, so unfolding the phone opens what the developers call a window to nature. Version 4.1.0 redesigns the Focus and Pomodoro timers, the Sleep Timer and the Wake Up Alarm for every pose the foldable can take.

Portal Labs Ltd, a small indie team based in the UK, released the update on the App Store. The developers say they have spent eight years trying to live up to the name Portal, and the iPhone Duo brings the idea of opening a window into the hardware itself.

The timers and alarm now fit every way you can hold the iPhone Duo

The iPhone Duo can sit closed, unfolded, seated on a table or standing up, and Portal’s update redesigns its tools to match. The Focus and Pomodoro timers, the Sleep Timer and the Wake Up Alarm each have a layout built for the foldable’s poses.

The release also refreshes the rest of the app. The Library has a simpler design with refined layouts and smoother transitions, and navigation animations are smoother. Dynamic Type support is better, and playback and environment controls have been refined. Image loading, caching and playback got performance improvements as well.

Fold Focus is another timer built around the hinge, though it rewards you for keeping the phone closed.

Version 4.0 added Circadian Flow, streaming playback and widgets

Portal’s iPhone Duo support lands on top of version 4.0, which shipped on September 14 and was the app’s biggest update in seven years. It brought a new design built on Liquid Glass, which requires iOS 26 or later, along with a long list of new features.

  • Circadian Flow, which syncs Portal with your local time of day and plays portals that follow the light outside
  • Streaming playback, so portals play instantly without downloading first
  • Playable collections that move from one scene to the next for a duration you choose
  • Favorites, search and audio normalization between portals
  • Home Screen, Lock Screen and Control Center widgets
  • Handoff between devices and improved Siri integration

Portal also connects to Philips Hue, HomeKit and Nanoleaf smart lights, and it supports Spatial Audio recordings. Head-tracked audio needs compatible headphones, including AirPods (3rd generation and later), AirPods Pro, AirPods Max and Beats Fit Pro.

Open Access is free and Premium starts at $2.99 a month

Portal’s Open Access tier is free and includes three portals that refresh each month. Premium unlocks the full Library and costs $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year, with a lifetime membership at $99.99. Premium covers the Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision Pro apps, and there is a 7-day trial that asks for no payment details and does not auto-subscribe.

The developers say Portal has no third-party tracking, no targeted ads and no collection of personal data. Apple has named the app an Editors’ Choice pick, and it works offline.

Portal is a 275.7 MB download that requires iOS 18.4 or later, and Family Sharing covers some in-app purchases and subscriptions.
