Apple just confirmed what leakers had been hinting at for weeks: the new iPhone Duo works with Apple Pencil. It’s the first time Apple has brought Pencil support to an iPhone, and it changes how you’ll think about that big folding display.
Here’s the catch. The feature isn’t live at launch. Apple says Pencil support is “coming later this year,” with no firm date and no word on which software update will unlock it.
What Apple Actually Confirmed
The official line from Apple is that iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C on either display, whether the phone is open or closed. That’s it. No mention of Apple Pencil Pro, no mention of a new stylus built specifically for the Duo, and no bundle pricing if you want to buy one alongside the phone.
A Pencil doesn’t come in the box either. Open up an iPhone Duo and you’ll find the phone itself and a 1-meter USB-C cable. If you want to sketch or take notes on that 7.6-inch inner display, you’re buying the Pencil separately, on top of the $79 case or $129 Folio Apple is also selling.
Why the Wait Makes Sense (Sort Of)
Rumors around this device go back a while. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had previously reported that Apple prototyped a dedicated, shorter Apple Pencil built just for the foldable, one that would magnetically attach and charge on the side of the phone. That accessory apparently didn’t make the cut. What shipped instead is broader support for the existing Apple Pencil with USB-C, and Apple is holding the software side back for a later release.
That’s not unusual for Apple. Hardware ships, software catches up. But it does mean early buyers who pre-order specifically for the Pencil experience will be stuck waiting, possibly months, before they can actually use it the way it was pitched on stage.
The Bigger Picture: iPhone Duo Specs
Pencil support is one part of a much bigger reveal. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, climbing to roughly $3,000 for the top storage tier. Inside, it runs on Apple’s 2nm A20 Pro chip paired with Apple’s own C2 modem, and the phone is eSIM-only everywhere, with no physical SIM tray in any country.
Open it up and you get a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner display at 1878 by 2670 pixels and 430 ppi, which Apple is calling the largest and thinnest iPhone display it has ever made. The cover material is a custom polymer Apple says is 40 percent stiffer than the industry standard, sitting over reinforced glass with a nano-texture finish to cut down on glare and fingerprints. Closed, you’re looking at a 5.4-inch outer display protected by Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple claims offers triple the scratch resistance of the previous generation.
Touch ID is built into the side button rather than Face ID, and you can also unlock the phone with your Apple Watch. The camera setup includes dual 48MP rear sensors and a 12MP front camera, tucked under the inner display so it stays out of view when you’re not using it.
Should You Wait for Pencil Support Before Buying?
If Apple Pencil compatibility is the reason you’re eyeing the iPhone Duo, pre-ordering now means buying on faith. You’ll get the hardware capability, but not the feature itself, at least not right away. Apple hasn’t said whether the update lands with iOS 27.1, which ships alongside the phone on October 23, or sometime after.
For everyone else, the Duo is shaping up to be Apple’s clearest pitch yet for blurring the line between iPhone and iPad. iPad-style multitasking, a genuinely large canvas, and now Pencil input all point toward the same idea: this isn’t just a bigger phone, it’s a smaller iPad that happens to fold shut and fit in your pocket.
Pre-orders open October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with the phone shipping October 23 in dark blue and white. Whether the Pencil feature arrives in time for launch day use, or shows up as a pleasant surprise a few months later, is still anyone’s guess.
