Apple has just taken the wraps off the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and this is one of the bigger camera and performance updates the Pro line has seen in years. The headline feature is variable aperture, a first for iPhone, alongside the new A20 Pro chip, a redesigned vapor chamber, and the biggest battery jump Apple has ever shipped on a Pro Max. The phones also mark the debut of Siri AI, Apple’s rebuilt assistant rolling out with iOS 27.
Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, with the phones landing in stores on Friday, September 18.
Pricing: iPhone 18 Pro Starts at $1,199
iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the US, and iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. Both are available in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage options, with financing bringing that down to roughly $49.95 and $54.12 a month over 24 months.

Both phones come in four finishes: black, silver, glacier, and a new burgundy that Apple is clearly leaning on as the hero color this year. Trade-in credit runs from $175 to $885 depending on your current device, and Apple’s carrier partners are offering up to $1,200 in credit if you’re trading in an iPhone 14 or newer, in any condition.
Variable Aperture Is the Real Headline Feature
This is the first time Apple has put a mechanical variable aperture on an iPhone camera. The new 48MP Fusion Main camera uses six laser-cut blades that physically open and close to control how much light hits the sensor, adjusting automatically for the scene in front of you. Wide open, it can hit f/1.48 for low light. Stopped down, it goes as narrow as f/4, which is genuinely useful if you’re shooting a group photo and want everyone in focus instead of just the person you tapped on.
Pro users get manual control over all four aperture stops directly in the Camera app, and Apple is opening an API so third-party camera apps can tap into the full aperture range too. Pair that with a new sensor and computational imaging pipeline, and Apple is promising sharper detail and noticeably better low-light shots across the board.
Photographic Styles also gets new texture and grain controls, letting you shape the look of a photo well beyond just color and tone. On video, Cinematic effects can now be applied after you’ve already shot the footage, up to 60fps, and Time-lapse mode finally supports 4K with Dolby Vision HDR. Audio Mix picks up better voice isolation too, plus the ability to isolate music separately from other sound.
Pro Controls Give You a Real Manual Camera
Alongside variable aperture, Apple is introducing Pro Controls, a redesigned manual shooting interface in the Camera app. You get direct access to shutter speed, white balance, and aperture, plus a histogram so you can actually check your exposure while you shoot instead of guessing. It’s the closest the stock Camera app has come to a proper manual mode.
Apple Reference Image: A New Way to Prove a Photo Is Real
With AI-generated and AI-edited images everywhere, Apple is introducing Apple Reference Image, a feature that lets the new sensor sign every pixel it captures. When you shoot in Reference mode, the camera saves signed sensor data that Private Cloud Compute turns into an unalterable reference copy of the image. You can pull that up in the Photos app next to your edited version and see exactly what changed, similar to comparing a RAW file against an export.
It’s an opt-in feature, and Apple’s also planning support for the SynthID standard down the line to help flag AI-generated or AI-edited images. Worth noting this won’t be available at launch in China, and the capture side is delayed in the EU as well.
A Smaller, Smarter Dynamic Island
The Dynamic Island shrinks a little this year but gets more useful, thanks to new display tech that frees up room for extra information. It can now juggle three Live Activities at once, on top of still handling Face ID for unlocking, payments, and app sign-ins.
A20 Pro: Built on 2nm, With a Real Focus on Sustained Performance
The A20 Pro is Apple’s first chip built on the 2-nanometer process, and it’s a meaningful jump. The new 6-core CPU gets integrated Neural Accelerators, memory bandwidth is up 50 percent over A19 Pro, and the 7-core GPU is up to 40 percent faster. There’s also a new Dual 16-core Neural Engine with 32 total cores, doubling the AI processing power compared to last year’s chip.
Apple redesigned the internal packaging too, borrowing an approach from its M-series Mac chips. The memory sits beside the silicon die instead of stacked on top of it, which keeps it out of the chip’s thermal path and lets A20 Pro connect directly to a next-generation vapor chamber. That vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the one in iPhone 17 Pro, and Apple says it delivers up to a 40 percent gain in sustained performance, the best an iPhone has ever managed under load.
On the connectivity side, both phones get Apple’s N1 wireless chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. iPhone 18 Pro also introduces C2, Apple’s next cellular modem, which brings faster uploads than C1X while using 15 percent less power, and now supports mmWave in the US.
Battery Life Takes Its Biggest Jump Yet
iPhone 18 Pro Max gets the largest battery life increase Apple has ever shipped on an iPhone. On the eSIM-only model, that’s up to 45 hours of video playback, with iPhone 18 Pro rated for up to 36 hours. Charging is faster too: iPhone 18 Pro can hit 50 percent in about 15 minutes wired, or 30 minutes wirelessly. On the Pro Max, just five minutes on a cable buys you around seven hours of playback, and Apple’s new usage model puts real-world battery life at up to 30 hours on a full charge.
eSIM-only models also get a slightly bigger battery, using the space freed up by removing the physical SIM tray, which adds roughly two extra hours of video playback on top of the numbers above.
iOS 27 and Siri AI
Both new iPhones ship with iOS 27 and get first access to Siri AI, Apple’s rebuilt assistant that’s rolling out in beta starting September 14. Siri AI can pull personal context from your messages, emails, and photos to answer questions in the moment, and it uses on-screen awareness to act on whatever’s in front of you. There’s a new Siri mode inside the Camera app for getting information about what you’re pointing at, and you can now write with Siri by just describing what you want.
Apple Intelligence also picks up Spatial Reframing and Extend for reworking photo composition after the fact, an upgraded Clean Up tool, and a more photorealistic Image Playground. In Safari, a new Notify Me feature watches web pages for changes like restocks or price drops.
Siri AI launches in English first, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish following in October. It won’t be available in the EU at launch. iOS 27 itself brings broader performance and reliability improvements, more Liquid Glass customization, stronger parental controls, and a new iPhone Handoff feature that lets you switch between two iPhones on the same number, currently supported by T-Mobile in the US and Telekom in Germany.
eSIM Availability
eSIM-only versions of both phones will be sold in the UAE, US, Canada, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Mexico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands. eSIM itself is now supported by more than 500 carriers worldwide.
New Accessories
Apple’s refreshed its accessory lineup to match the four new finishes, including Silicone Cases, TechWoven Cases, FineWoven Wallets, and a new Crossbody Strap. There’s also a new Wrist Strap made from recycled polyester with built-in magnets, priced at $29 and available in six colors. The Clear Case has been redesigned and now works with both the Crossbody and Wrist Straps.
Environmental Notes
Both phones use 40 percent recycled content overall, including fully recycled cobalt in the battery and 85 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure. Apple says the supply chain now runs on 50 percent renewable energy, and packaging remains 100 percent fiber-based.
Should You Upgrade?
If you’re still on an iPhone 15 Pro or older, this is a genuinely big jump: variable aperture alone changes how you shoot, the battery gains on the Pro Max are the largest Apple has ever delivered, and A20 Pro’s thermal redesign should mean far less throttling during long gaming or camera sessions. If you picked up an iPhone 17 Pro last year, this feels more like a strong camera and battery refresh than something you need to rush out for, unless variable aperture specifically is something you’ll use.
