Apple Says Affected iPhone 18 Pro Max Units on AT&T Need to Be Replaced

Apple has addressed the cellular failures hitting iPhone 18 Pro Max owners on AT&T. Phones that have already lost service need to be replaced, and the software updates Apple is rolling out only help phones that still work.

The statement came on Friday, October 2, a day after AT&T texted customers to install iOS 27.0.1 immediately. It spells out what that update can and cannot do for a phone that has dropped off the network.

Apple Says a Software Update Cannot Revive an iPhone 18 Pro Max That Lost Service

Apple’s position is that an iPhone 18 Pro Max stuck without service on AT&T needs a hardware replacement, and no update or settings change can repair it. Here is the statement in full.

“We have identified an issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network that may cause a device to lose service and be unable to make calls. We released iOS 27.0.1 earlier this week and strongly encourage all iPhone 18 Pro Max users to update now, and are also issuing a carrier settings update today. These updates together are meant to help prevent this issue from occurring.”

Apple describes the group as a small number of users. It has only tied the failure to the iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T, and not every phone on that carrier is affected. Owners who are hit see “SOS” in the status bar where the signal bars should be, with calls, texts, and mobile data all down.

Anyone in that position should contact Apple Support or AT&T, or visit an Apple Store or an AT&T store.

Apple has not said what causes the failure. The US iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone that uses a Qualcomm modem, and the US model differs from the other regional versions in SIM support and battery size. Apple has not said whether either detail is connected to the AT&T failures.

iOS 27.0.1 and a New Carrier Settings Update Are Meant to Keep More Phones From Failing

Apple is urging every iPhone 18 Pro Max owner to install iOS 27.0.1, which came out earlier this week. The goal is to protect phones that are still working. Neither the update nor the carrier settings change does anything for a phone that has already failed.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.
  4. Install iOS 27.0.1 if it shows up.

The carrier settings update went out on October 2. To pull it down right away, open Settings, tap General, then tap About, and the iPhone checks for it there. Otherwise it arrives on its own for AT&T customers over the next 14 days.
