Calif’s Lockdown Mode Jailbreak Stays in Place After iOS 27.2

A new demo from a security firm shows a Lockdown Mode jailbreak that stays in place after an iPhone installs iOS 27.2. Apple built Lockdown Mode for people who might be personally targeted by sophisticated threats, and Settings shows it switched on before the jailbreak appears on screen.

Calif posted the demo video on X on November 3, after its iPhone 18 Pro jailbreak and iPhone Duo jailbreak demos in October. In March, Apple said it was not aware of any successful mercenary spyware attacks against a Lockdown Mode device.

The Lockdown Mode Jailbreak Remains After the iOS 27.2 Update

The phone starts on the home screen, and Settings then shows Lockdown Mode switched on under Privacy & Security. Safari loads a news story about Apple’s claim that no Lockdown Mode user has been hacked, with the Lockdown Mode banner at the bottom. A PDF résumé opens next, and Calif’s logo and an animated character appear on the screen.

The phone then opens Software Update and installs iOS 27.2, which Apple released on October 26 with 163 security fixes. It restarts and asks for its passcode, then returns to Settings, where Calif’s logo and the character are still on the screen.

Whether the same bugs work on a phone that already runs iOS 27.2 is unknown, because the phone is jailbroken before it updates. The iPhone model and the iOS version it started on are unknown too.

Lockdown Mode Cuts Down What an iPhone Attack Can Reach

Apple calls Lockdown Mode an optional, extreme protection that changes how the phone works. Among other limits, it blocks most message attachment types and restricts complex web technologies in Safari.

You turn it on in Settings under Privacy & Security. Google’s researchers found that the Coruna exploit kit, which bundles 23 exploits for iOS 13 through iOS 17.2.1, stops its attack when it detects Lockdown Mode.

Calif Has Shown Three Jailbreak Demos in 18 Days

Calif showed an untethered iPhone 18 Pro jailbreak at Hexacon in Paris on October 16, and root access returned after the phone restarted. It posted iPhone Duo jailbreak photos and video on October 23, the day the foldable went on sale, and the Lockdown Mode video is the third demo in 18 days.

Calif has said the demos from its October 16 talk will be released in due time. The bugs behind all three demos have not been published, and no tool is public. The first public jailbreak for iOS 26, Dopamine 3.0, took 326 days to arrive and works only on iOS 26.0 and iOS 26.0.1 on A12 and A13 chips.

Apple does not confirm security issues until patches are available. The company appears to be testing iOS 27.2.1, which would be the next update most iPhone owners can install.
