In iOS 26 beta 5, Apple has introduced a subtle but meaningful improvement to how AirPods users can monitor charging status. The latest update enhances the visibility of the charging indicator on the AirPods charging case and adds new reminders that prompt users when it’s time to recharge. These changes are designed to make the charging experience more intuitive and proactive, especially for users who rely on their AirPods throughout the day.

According to strings discovered in the code, iOS 26 now allows the AirPods charging case to “more clearly indicate charging status.” A new splash screen shared on social media reveals how the indicator lights are differentiated more clearly: one shade of amber shows when the AirPods themselves are charging, another for when the charging case is charging, and green indicates a fully charged state. This clarification helps eliminate any confusion about what the light is actually signaling.
With iOS 26, Apple seems to be enhancing this system by possibly showing the amber “needs charging” indicator even when the case is closed. This would allow users to know at a glance whether the case itself is running low on power, without needing to open the lid. It aligns with Apple’s push toward making battery status more visible and actionable across its ecosystem.
In addition to the improved indicator system, earlier betas of iOS 26 also introduced charging reminders sent to iPhones. These notifications appear even if the AirPods are not currently in use, providing users with helpful alerts so they can top up their battery in advance. This feature is particularly useful for those who frequently forget to charge their AirPods until they are about to use them.
These small refinements in iOS 26 reflect Apple’s ongoing focus on user experience and long-term device readiness. With clearer charging lights and timely alerts, AirPods users can manage their accessories more efficiently.
