Apple discontinues iPhone 16 Pro and more after iPhone 17 event

Apple’s “Awe Dropping” September 9 event brought plenty of new hardware to the spotlight, but it also meant saying goodbye to several recent models. With the introduction of the iPhone 17 lineup, the ultra-thin iPhone Air, Apple Watch Ultra 3, Apple Watch Series 11, and AirPods Pro 3, the company quietly removed a number of devices from its online store.

Apple discontinued products

This yearly product shuffle is part of Apple’s strategy to keep its lineup streamlined and focused on the latest generation. While discontinued devices remain available through third-party retailers, they no longer have a place in Apple’s official store, which signals the beginning of their countdown toward vintage and eventually obsolete status.

The list of discontinued products this year is significant because it includes models that were released just last year. Apple pulled the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus from its store, while also dropping the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, both of which were only introduced in 2024. This move leaves buyers with the choice of either going for the latest iPhone 17 models or opting for the entry-level iPhone 16, which Apple continues to sell.

Here are the devices Apple officially discontinued following the event:

  • iPhone 15

  • iPhone 15 Plus

  • iPhone 16 Pro

  • iPhone 16 Pro Max

  • Apple Watch Ultra 2

  • Apple Watch Series 10

  • Apple Watch SE 2

  • AirPods Pro 2

The Apple Watch lineup also saw some cuts. The Apple Watch Ultra 2, Series 10, and SE 2 are no longer available directly from Apple, replaced by newer versions that bring updated health features, brighter displays, and improved performance. On the audio side, the AirPods Pro 2 have officially been discontinued to make room for the AirPods Pro 3, which now take center stage with stronger noise cancellation and improved sound quality.

For customers, this discontinuation does not mean these products disappear right away. Third-party retailers like Amazon and Best Buy will still carry them for a while, often at reduced prices. In fact, this period is when bargain hunters can secure last year’s flagship models at attractive discounts before they gradually become harder to find.
