Apple confirms iOS 26 wallet passport feature on track for 2025 release

Apple will be adding support for storing passports in the Wallet app as part of iOS 26. This expands the Digital ID feature already used for driver’s licenses and state IDs, making Wallet a more complete hub for government-issued identification on iPhone.

As highlighted by MacRumors, Apple updated its official iOS 26 features page to confirm that “Digital ID will be coming later this year with U.S. passports only.” This makes it clear that Apple is still on track to release the feature within this year, however, it’s not certain whether it will be a part of iOS 26.1 release. In iOS 26.1 beta 1, no references have been found to this feature in the code or functionality.

The passport feature is expected to work in the same way as existing Wallet IDs. Users will be able to add their credential, verify identity, and present it at participating locations. Apple specifically notes use at TSA checkpoints for domestic flights, where digital IDs are already supported. This is not a replacement for physical documents when traveling internationally.

Apple has not announced any global rollout, and the initial implementation will be limited to the United States. Broader availability would depend on cooperation with other governments and agencies so don’t throw your physical passport in the storage yet alongside your credit cards and other documents that have been completely replaced by the Wallet app.

As with all Wallet IDs, security and privacy remain central. Information is stored on device and protected by Face ID or Touch ID. Only the necessary fields are shared when presenting the ID, so users remain in control of what information is disclosed. A number of other work in progress features have also been found in iOS 26.1 beta, check them out below:
