tvOS 26.1 released with Apple TV app rebrand and performance improvements

Apple has released tvOS 26.1, a minor but important update to the tvOS 26 operating system that debuted in September. The update is available for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD models, with the Liquid Glass interface supported only on the second-generation Apple TV 4K and later.

tvOS 26.1 update

Users can install tvOS 26.1 by opening the Settings app on their Apple TV and navigating to System > Software Update, or wait for automatic updates to apply. While this release does not add any new features, it focuses on stability, reliability, and visual consistency across Apple’s expanding ecosystem.

The most visible change in tvOS 26.1 is the rebranding of the Apple TV app. Apple has dropped the “TV+” branding in favor of a simplified Apple TV name and icon, aligning it with the updated design language seen in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. The refreshed app icon now features a more colorful gradient, reflecting Apple’s subtle visual evolution across its entertainment platforms.

tvOS 26.1 update

Beyond cosmetic updates, tvOS 26.1 includes multiple performance optimizations and bug fixes to ensure smooth playback and navigation. The update improves overall responsiveness, reduces lag when switching between apps, and enhances the stability of features introduced in tvOS 26, such as the Liquid Glass design and Music app upgrades.

Developers will also benefit from several fixes in the tvOS 26.1 SDK, bundled with Xcode 26.1. Apple has resolved asset file lookup errors in AssetPackManager, corrected timing issues in Game Controller input, and fixed SwiftUI crashes related to navigation link visibility. Additionally, modal sheets now present correctly in full-screen mode instead of reverting to a smaller, modal style.

While tvOS 26.1 may not deliver headline-grabbing features, its refinements are essential for maintaining system stability and compatibility across Apple’s devices. The update also helps ensure that media experiences remain consistent as Apple continues its rebranding effort across the Apple TV ecosystem.
