Google Gemini app for Mac now available

Google has released a native Gemini app for macOS, bringing its AI assistant directly to the desktop without relying on a browser. This marks the first dedicated macOS app for Gemini and expands its availability beyond web and mobile platforms. The app is built entirely in Swift, which means it runs natively and is optimized for performance on Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 15 or later.

The move aligns with Google’s push to make Gemini more accessible across platforms, especially as AI assistants become a core part of everyday workflows. Until now, Mac users had to rely on the web interface, which added friction when switching between tabs or apps. The native app removes that layer and puts Gemini one shortcut away from any task on the desktop.

The Gemini app for Mac focuses heavily on speed and accessibility. Users can launch a compact chat window using Option + Space, or open the full interface with Option + Shift + Space. These shortcuts can be customized, allowing users to tailor how they interact with the assistant. The app also integrates with macOS through the menu bar and Dock, making it feel like a built-in tool rather than an external service.

A key feature is screen sharing, which allows users to give Gemini direct context from whatever they are working on. This includes sharing specific windows or local files so the assistant can summarize content, analyze data, or answer questions based on what is visible on screen. For example, users reviewing charts or documents can instantly get insights without manually copying content into a prompt.

The app supports a wide range of tasks, including writing, summarizing documents, brainstorming ideas, generating code, and analyzing images. It also includes tools for creating images, videos, and other AI-generated content, keeping it competitive with other desktop AI apps already available on macOS. Everything syncs with the user’s Google account, so activity carries across desktop, web, and mobile.

Google is also emphasizing workflow continuity. The app is designed to stay out of the way until needed, letting users call it up mid-task and then return to work without disruption. This addresses one of the biggest usability gaps in browser-based AI tools, where constant tab switching can interrupt focus.

The launch also comes at a time when competition in desktop AI is increasing. Native apps from other AI providers have already established a presence on macOS, and Google’s entry ensures Gemini is no longer limited to the browser experience. The company is positioning this release as the foundation for a more proactive and personalized assistant that can operate across the entire desktop environment.

Looking ahead, the Gemini app may play a larger role within Apple’s ecosystem. Apple is expected to expand its AI capabilities, and partnerships involving Gemini models have already been hinted at for future Siri updates and Apple Intelligence features. More details are likely to emerge at WWDC in June, where Apple typically outlines its software roadmap.

The Gemini app for Mac is available as a free download and works globally, with some regional exceptions due to access restrictions. For Mac users already relying on Google services, this release brings Gemini closer to being a constant, system-level assistant rather than a separate tool.
