Apple TV HD (2015) and the first-generation Apple TV 4K (2017) will not support tvOS 27. Both devices remain compatible with tvOS 26, but they are excluded from Apple’s next major software cycle, ending eligibility for the upcoming update.
tvOS 27 is compatible with Apple TV 4K (2nd generation, 2021) and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, 2022), according to Apple’s official compatibility list. These are now the only Apple TV models set to receive the update when it rolls out later this year, likely in September.

The Apple TV HD has received roughly a decade of software support, spanning from its 2015 launch through tvOS 26. The first-generation Apple TV 4K also saw nearly nine years of updates, from 2017 through the current release cycle. This marks a gradual phase-out of older hardware as Apple continues shifting focus toward newer A-series powered models.
tvOS 27 introduces a redesigned Podcasts app, smoother app launches and animations, and expanded support for larger text across the interface. Apple Music playback also gains improved support for high-quality audio output, including Hi-Res Lossless playback on compatible external audio setups such as supported DACs and receivers connected to Apple TV. These enhancements are limited to tvOS 27 and are not available on devices remaining on tvOS 26.
Similar to how watchOS 27 cuts off several Apple Watch models, this represents a natural end-of-life for aging hardware. Once tvOS 26 reaches end-of-life, security updates will stop arriving entirely.
Timeline and rollout
Developer beta versions of tvOS 27 are available now. A public beta is expected in July, with final release targeted for September 2026.
Apple gave tvOS 27 minimal attention during the WWDC keynote, a notable shift from major releases in prior years. Apple is holding off on new Apple TV and HomePod mini hardware until its personalized Siri feature is ready. A fourth-generation Apple TV 4K is expected sometime later in 2026.
Interestingly, Apple keeps the iPhone 11 alive with iOS 27 support, showing variable compatibility policies across platforms. For Apple TV owners facing cutoffs, you should decide soon: upgrade to a 2nd or 3rd generation 4K model now, or wait for the rumored refresh later this year.
