How to Install the iOS 27 Developer Beta for Free

You do not need a paid Apple Developer Program membership to install the iOS 27 developer beta. That misconception has stopped many iPhone owners from trying early software for years, but anyone can register as an Apple developer for free and access the beta today. Apple seeded the first iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27 developer betas following the WWDC 2026 keynote on June 8, 2026.

One caveat before you start: iOS betas contain bugs and performance issues. Some apps may not work correctly, and problems can extend to CarPlay. Before downloading, it is worth taking a moment to free up iPhone storage before installing the iOS 27 beta to avoid interruptions mid-install. Installing the developer beta on a primary iPhone carries real risk. That said, early reports suggest iOS 27 beta 1 is relatively stable compared to some previous first betas.

How to install the iOS 27 developer beta

  1. Go to developer.apple.com on your iPhone or any browser. Sign in with your Apple Account. You do not need any apps on the App Store or any fee to proceed.
  2. Accept the Apple Developer Agreement. Once signed in, you will be prompted to review and accept the agreement. This registers you as an Apple developer at no cost, and the step is required before your device can access developer beta software.
  3. Open the Settings app on your iPhone. Tap General, then tap Software Update.
  4. Tap Beta Updates. This option sits just below the standard Software Update section. If you do not see it, restart your iPhone and check again.
  5. Select iOS 27 Developer Beta. The option appears after you complete the developer agreement in step 2. Tap it to enable that update channel.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install. Your iPhone will locate the iOS 27 developer beta and walk you through the standard installation process. Make sure your device has sufficient battery or is plugged in before starting.

The full download is several gigabytes, so use a Wi-Fi connection. Installation takes several minutes and requires a restart.

How to join the Siri AI waitlist

Siri AI, the headline feature of iOS 27, is not available the moment iOS 27 finishes installing. Apple is using a waitlist system to gradually roll out access, similar to how Apple Intelligence features were introduced during the iOS 18.1 beta cycle. This lets Apple manage server load and catch issues before expanding availability more broadly.

  1. Open the Settings app after installing iOS 27.
  2. Tap Siri. An option to join the Siri AI waitlist will appear here.
  3. Tap to join the waitlist. Access can arrive anywhere from a few hours to several days after joining. Once you join on one device, your other Apple devices are automatically added to the waitlist as well.

Siri AI requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. On-device processing for improved dictation and a customizable Siri voice requires an iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone Air specifically. Siri AI is free to use, though Apple applies daily limits to certain capabilities like image generation.

Siri AI will not be available in the European Union at launch due to complications with the Digital Markets Act. It is also unavailable in China.

What to expect after installing

iOS 27 is compatible with the iPhone 11 and newer, so the developer beta runs on a wide range of devices. Apple says the update brings performance improvements across the board, and early testers report that everything feels noticeably faster, even on older hardware.

Beyond Siri AI, the beta includes a Liquid Glass slider for adjusting translucency levels across the interface, extra-large home screen widgets for apps like Calendar, Photos, and Music, and a new “Search or Ask” interface accessed by swiping down on the Dynamic Island area. Apple Wallet also gains a “Create a Pass” feature for building digital passes from physical cards like gym memberships.

If you would rather wait for a more polished experience, Apple says the first iOS 27 public beta will arrive at some point in July 2026. The final release is expected for all compatible iPhones in September 2026. The public beta is equally free and requires only a sign-up at beta.apple.com.

Installing the iOS 27 developer beta takes about six steps, costs nothing, and is open to any iPhone owner willing to accept the developer agreement at developer.apple.com. The trade-off is stability: this is pre-release software, and some apps and features will not behave as expected. If that risk is not acceptable, the public beta in July or the full release in September are both worth the wait.
