Apple’s latest iOS 27 beta may have revealed another clue about its long-rumored foldable iPhone. Hidden inside the fourth developer beta are new Battery Health messages that refer to multiple batteries inside a single iPhone, something no current iPhone model has ever used.
On its own, the discovery (via Macworld) doesn’t confirm a new device. However, it closely matches months of reports claiming Apple’s first foldable iPhone will use two separate battery cells, making this one of the clearest software hints yet that iOS 27 is being prepared for entirely new hardware.
The new strings, discovered in iOS 27 beta 4, use wording that differs from every shipping iPhone today. Instead of referring to “the battery in this iPhone,” Apple now includes messages such as “The batteries in this iPhone are performing as expected” and warnings that “one of the batteries” may need service or may not be recognized as a genuine Apple battery.
That change is significant because every iPhone Apple has released so far contains a single internal battery.
A dual-battery design is widely expected for Apple’s first foldable iPhone. Like other book-style foldables, the device would likely place one battery in each half of the chassis, allowing Apple to make better use of the limited internal space created by the hinge while distributing power more evenly across both sides of the device.
Recent regulatory filings have also pointed toward a two-cell battery configuration with capacities of roughly 1,921mAh and 2,962mAh, for a combined capacity of approximately 4,883mAh.
This isn’t the first foldable reference found inside iOS 27. Earlier beta releases included code related to fold states and hinge angle detection, while Apple has also encouraged developers to prepare their apps for additional display configurations. Individually, these discoveries don’t prove a foldable iPhone is coming, but together they paint an increasingly consistent picture.
One interesting detail from the latest code is that iOS appears ready to monitor each battery independently. The software includes messages suggesting a single degraded battery could potentially be replaced without affecting the other, although Apple has not confirmed how repairs would work on future hardware.
As always, software references should be treated cautiously. Apple frequently adds code for products and features that never reach customers. Still, the latest beta lines up with multiple supply chain reports and previous discoveries inside iOS 27, making it harder to dismiss as coincidence.
If Apple unveils its first foldable iPhone this September, the groundwork appears to have been quietly built into iOS 27 for months.
