Geekbench 7 is now available with improved workloads to benchmark the performance on CPUs and GPUs. It is one of the most popular cross-platform benchmarking apps in the world, and the latest release indicates that they have no plans of slowing down with their improvements. The update is available for iOS, Mac, Windows, Android, and Linux.
As per the developers, Geekbench 7 features new media workloads that put your CPU through its paces by testing encoding and decoding for audio and video. While we take these tasks for granted, they can be used to stress test even the best of CPUs. These tests are also reflective of real world usage, as they are modeled after video conferencing, screen sharing and content consumption, all of which heavily use video and audio. These tests will:
- Encode screen-sharing video with the AV1 codec, modeling the screen-sharing features in video conferencing apps.
- Compress music and spoken-word audio with the Opus codec, modeling voice memo and podcast apps.
- Decode video and audio while generating live captions with the Whisper speech recognition model, modeling video playback with automatic subtitles enabled.
These is also a new Game Physics workload which is build on the Jolt Physics video game engine. The Photo Editor workload has also been improved with real-world samples as well as support for importing and processing modern image formats which include JPEG XL and DNG.
Other improvements include multi-core benchmark improvements, which also follow the same trend of reflecting real-world usage and workloads. As per the official announcements:
…a workload only runs in multi-threaded mode if the task it models actually runs multi-threaded in real applications. For example, the HTML5 Browser test isn’t included in the multi-threaded suite because web browsers are single-threaded (or lightly threaded).
Lastly, the GPU benchmark now includes workloads that test the following:
- Track faces and apply real-time filter effects to video, modeling the face filters in social media apps.
- Upscale images with machine learning, modeling super resolution features in content creation apps.
- Blur backgrounds in video conferencing streams, modeling virtual background features in video conferencing apps.
