OpenAI has updated the ChatGPT desktop app, bringing back voice to macOS with a notably better foundation than what existed before. The new ChatGPT Voice feature runs on GPT-Live, the upgraded voice architecture that launched early this month, and it enables continuous two-way conversation alongside the ability to direct ongoing tasks in Chat, Work, and Codex using only your voice.
Voice disappeared from the macOS app in January 2026 when OpenAI cited incompatibility with its new voice architecture. Six months without voice on desktop was a long gap, especially as iPhone and iPad users got GPT-Live in early July. The desktop app has finally caught up.
What GPT-Live actually does
GPT-Live is not the old voice mode refreshed – it listens and speaks simultaneously, making interaction genuinely conversational rather than turn-based. It handles interruptions naturally, uses acknowledgment phrases like “mhmm” to signal attention, and makes decisions about whether to speak, pause, listen, or call a tool multiple times per second. You can talk over it while it speaks and it adjusts. That is a meaningful leap from the original Mac implementation.
On the task side, you can start a new chat or task in voice mode and then direct ChatGPT to start, check, or steer work running in other threads. This means you can have Codex running an agentic task and manage it verbally without constant context-switching. ChatGPT Voice also works with Computer Use, local files, and ChatGPT plugins.

Mac-exclusive Appshots
Mac users get one capability Windows lacks: Appshots. When ChatGPT Voice is active, it can reference whichever window is currently in focus, giving it visual context without you describing what is on screen. This is genuinely useful for voice-driven workflows where you want to ask questions about something you are already looking at.
Availability is limited to paid plans: Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise. Free users are not included.
At launch, GPT-Live does not support voice with video or screen sharing. Those features are in development but legacy ChatGPT Voice mode still handles both if you need them now.
The ChatGPT desktop app has undergone significant structural shifts. The old ChatGPT app is now called ChatGPT Classic. What was formerly Codex is now the primary ChatGPT desktop app, still carrying the Codex icon as an option. That transition has generated friction: the app does not feel particularly native on macOS and sizing is awkward. People have opinions.
This update also improves project folder management. Local projects can now include multiple related folders, you can designate a primary folder and add secondary folders, and secondary folders remain accessible for file search, reading, and editing.
