Microsoft’s Vista-to-Windows 7 arc is one of the most instructive lessons in software history, and Apple just lived through its own version of it. iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe arrived with sweeping ambition, landed to a genuinely mixed reception, and are now being followed by a refinement release, iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate, that is doing for Liquid Glass what Windows 7 did for Aero Glass: making it actually work.
What Longhorn promised, Vista struggled to deliver
Longhorn, Microsoft’s codename for what became Vista, represented years of promises about a new visual language, a rethought file system, and a reimagined Windows experience. What shipped in 2007 delivered some of that, but arrived with software bugs, performance problems, constant User Account Control dialogs, and a polarizing design that many users rejected outright. Windows 7, released two years later, was largely Vista’s codebase refined and optimized. It kept the foundation, fixed the friction, and users loved it for exactly that.
Apple’s 2025 cycle reads remarkably similarly as iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe, released in September 2025, introduced Liquid Glass, a translucent material that reflects light and color from whatever sits behind it, across essentially the entire interface: icons, folders, the Dock, navigation bars, menus, toolbars, and Control Center. It also released alongside a delayed Siri which was promised to bring a new level of personal intelligence to Appleās platforms.
Apple positioned Liquid Glass as the basis of the next decade of its operating system design, the first major visual overhaul since iOS 7. Comparing iOS 27 vs iOS 26 side by side makes it clear how much ground Apple felt it needed to recover in a single release cycle.
The reception that followed
Early feedback on macOS Tahoe in particular was rough as users reported choppy animations and visual anomalies, and public sentiment in some corners ran bleak enough that commenters described macOS 26 as “pretty much a lost cause” and characterized further updates as “just putting lipstick on a pig.” That kind of language, directed at a shipping Apple operating system, is not common. The mixed Apple Intelligence rollout alongside the redesign compounded the sense that Apple had reached for too much at once.
Vista’s critics had similar feedback largely due to its visual upgrades, and performance penalties on all users. The visual ambition was there but the execution left people cold. Both companies made big promises, shipped a visually dramatic but operationally rocky first release, and faced the same obvious question: what comes next?
Golden Gate as Apple’s Windows 7
iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate, due in Fall 2026, are Apple’s answer to that question. The approach mirrors Microsoft’s post-Vista playbook almost exactly. Rather than abandoning Liquid Glass and starting over, Apple is refining it into something that addresses the legitimate complaints without dismantling the vision.
The changes Apple has made to Liquid Glass in macOS Golden Gate are telling:
- A transparency slider lets users control the opacity of Liquid Glass elements directly
- Improved opacity diffuses complex content behind glass more effectively, improving legibility
- Darkened edges and brighter highlights add UI depth and better visual separation
- Updated window shadows make it easier to distinguish active from inactive windows
- Apps now use uniform toolbars, edge-to-edge sidebars, and less rounded corners
- Fewer icons clutter the menu bar
Performance is the other pillar, testers on iOS 27 beta are already noting that the overall feel of the OS and its animations are faster and more seamless, and the iOS 27 improvements go well beyond surface polish. Apple has also made explicit performance gains across macOS Golden Gate for older Macs, though macOS Golden Gate drops Intel Mac support entirely, so that attention to aging hardware only goes so far. These engineering level enhancements are exactly what Windows 7 was praised for a decade and a half ago.
At WWDC 2026 in June, Apple showed a slide listing over 250 changes across iOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, and other platforms. Apple was telling users, and the press, that this is a refinement cycle, like Snow Leopard, not another revolutionary release. The expanded Siri AI features in iOS 27 are part of that story too, representing Apple Intelligence capabilities that were promised during the macOS Tahoe era and earlier, are only now arriving in a form that holds up in daily use.
If I to pinpoint one Vista parallel that remains unresolved, it is the increased number of permission pop-ups for everything ranging from clipboard, to app access, that are part of iOS and macOS. It is unclear what is the solution for these since they help as privacy protections, but they are obtrusive
