Samsung Display will exclusively supply the OLED touchscreen panels for Apple’s redesigned MacBook Ultra, according to a report from The Elec, with mass production of the 14-inch and 16-inch panels set to begin around August. The story confirms what supply chain watchers have suspected for months: LG Display and BOE Technology Group are not in the picture, and Samsung has this one entirely to itself.

The panels will be produced at Samsung’s 8.6-generation OLED line at its Asan campus in South Korea’s South Chungcheong Province, which became operational in January 2026. The Elec reports that the estimated initial supply run is 250,000 panels. An 8.6G fab uses larger glass substrates than smartphone OLED lines, which means multiple laptop-sized panels can be cut from a single sheet, improving both yields and unit economics at scale.

Why LG and BOE didn’t make the cut

Apple reportedly excluded both LG Display and BOE Technology Group from development consideration due to yield issues, leaving Samsung as the only supplier capable of meeting Apple’s requirements for large-format OLED panels with integrated touch functionality. Samsung Display has reportedly achieved yields above 90 percent on its Gen 8.6 line, with some individual process stages reaching as high as 95 percent, a threshold the display industry considers “golden yield” territory for stable mass production. That kind of consistency is hard to replicate, and neither LG nor BOE came close enough to qualify.

The panels use rigid OLED structures with oxide TFT backplanes and advanced tandem OLED configurations, which offer higher brightness, better power efficiency, and longer lifespan than conventional single-stack OLED panels.
