Apple is internally testing two new iPhone display sizes, 6.4 inches and 6.96 inches, intended for the 20th anniversary iPhone expected in fall 2027, according to Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station posting on Weibo. This is not the first time that Digital Chat Station has made this claim as this builds upon their earlier claim about the 6.96-inch panel from late July.
The 6.96-inch figure is close enough to 7 inches that Apple would likely market it as such, particularly given that the anniversary models are expected to feature curved glass wrapping around all four edges, producing a borderless effect that makes panel measurements read larger than physical device footprint would suggest. The leaker notes that both devices maintain the same aspect ratio as the current iPhone 17 Pro Max, meaning the size increase reflects genuinely larger panels rather than bezel trimming alone.
Apple last changed its Pro display sizes with the iPhone 16 Pro lineup in 2024, when the Pro grew from 6.1 to 6.3 inches and the Pro Max from 6.7 to 6.9 inches. The iPhone 17 Pro held those sizes, and the iPhone 18 Pro, expected to be unveiled in the first half of September, will hold them again at 6.3 and 6.9 inches. That’s two full cycles without movement, which makes the 2027 prototypes a more deliberate signal than a typical incremental rumor.
Apple’s naming strategy for the anniversary line is still unsettled. The company skipped “iPhone 9” ahead of the iPhone X in 2017, and current speculation suggests it may skip “iPhone 19” entirely, with the device referred to interchangeably as “iPhone 20” and “iPhone XX” across supply chain reports.
Display size is only part of the redesign
The larger screens arrive alongside what is shaping up to be the most significant iPhone redesign since the iPhone X. The full spec picture currently attributed to the 20th anniversary models includes:
- Under-display Face ID
- A custom Apple image sensor with per-pixel variable light storage and up to 20 stops of dynamic range, replacing Sony sensors currently used across the lineup
- Haptic buttons
- The A21 chip with higher bandwidth memory
- A pure silicon battery
- Quad-curved glass wrapping the front and back
Apple is expected to launch the 20th anniversary iPhone in fall 2027 alongside a second-generation foldable iPhone, following the iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2 in the spring.
