Analyst Jeff Pu published a research note this week detailing five key improvements coming to the iPhone Air 2, offering the most comprehensive picture yet of the second-generation model ahead of its expected first-quarter 2027 launch.
The most visible change is a slightly smaller Dynamic Island, a feature set to debut on the iPhone 18 Pro models launching in September 2026 before arriving in the Air lineup. The reduction is modest but gives users a little more usable screen market on the same 6.5-inch display carried over from the current model.
The more consequential upgrade for most buyers is the addition of a second rear camera. The current iPhone Air has drawn consistent criticism for its single-lens system, and the iPhone Air 2 addresses that directly with a new 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens alongside the existing 48-megapixel Fusion camera. The front camera stays at 18 megapixels with Center Stage support, and RAM remains at 12GB.
Pu’s note points to an A20 Pro chip built on TSMC’s 2-nanometer process with Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module packaging, a step up from the 3nm A19 Pro in the current Air. The A20 chip efficiency gains from the 2nm fabrication should deliver better performance without meaningfully changing the chip’s physical footprint. The device is also said to carry Apple’s second-generation N2 wireless networking chip and C2 5G modem.
Battery capacity rises to 3,500mAh, an 11% increase over the current model’s 3,149mAh. Combined with the processor efficiency gains, that should translate to a real improvement in all-day endurance, which has been one of the more persistent complaints about the original, as iPhone Air battery life tests have shown.
Apple is also said to be adopting a Samsung-made OLED technology called CoE (Color Filter on Encapsulation), which allows for a thinner display panel and could make the iPhone Air 2 even slimmer than its predecessor despite carrying more hardware inside.
The Information reported late last year that Apple had indefinitely delayed the second-generation model following lower-than-expected sales of the original, before updating that reporting to clarify the device had not been canceled and remains in development. The dual-camera addition and the elimination of the model’s most common complaint suggest Apple views the original’s positioning as a genuine problem worth fixing, not a design constraint to accept.
