Apple appears to be building a redesigned StandBy mode for the iPhone Duo, complete with new faces and a face editor that follows the one on the Apple Watch. Code in the iOS 27.1 simulator lists five faces that have not been reported before, along with new layout options.
Developer and Apple software researcher pdfu shared the findings in a post on X. The Rushmore app, which is expected to host the redesigned StandBy faces, is missing from the simulator, so the details come from localization strings and the current renderer. The researcher still got several of the new faces running there. Everything here comes from code and simulator assets, and Apple can change or remove the designs before release.
Five New StandBy Faces Are Listed in the iPhone Duo Code
The faces that are running so far are variants of the clock and calendar faces StandBy already offers on the iPhone. The code also references five more faces for the iPhone Duo.
- Home Camera shows either a single camera view or a grid of up to nine camera feeds.
- Home Modular is a Home-focused version of Apple’s modular face design, with a layout and controls that are still unclear.
- Flow is referenced internally as “ResponsiveArt” and could be an animated or abstract face that changes while the phone sits in StandBy mode.
- Fade is listed in the code with no details on how it looks or behaves.
- Snoopy brings one of the familiar Apple Watch character faces to the iPhone Duo.
Home Camera has the clearest everyday use. A docked iPhone Duo could work as a small monitor for compatible HomeKit cameras, showing one feed or a grid of up to nine.
Flow is the most curious name on the list. The “ResponsiveArt” label suggests a face that moves and changes on its own while the iPhone Duo is docked. Snoopy is a character face Apple Watch owners already know, now listed for the foldable. A reference in code does not mean a feature ships right away, so none of the five is confirmed for launch.
The iPhone Duo’s software has leaked through a simulator before. Apple’s wallpapers for the phone were found inside the Xcode 27.1 simulator earlier this month.
The Face Editor Follows the Apple Watch Design
The new editor is similar to the current StandBy editor on the iPhone, and it leans closer to the Apple Watch face editor. Users swipe left and right to change a face’s settings. On an analog clock, that covers the style, the numerals, light or dark mode, and the color of the face and the hands.
Some of the clock faces also have room for two widgets. The digital faces are different, with code references to five layouts named StandBy, Stacked, Top, Middle and Bottom. All but the StandBy layout may be meant for when the iPhone Duo is opened like a book.
StandBy today centers on clocks, widgets, photos and other glanceable information. A face editor with settings for each face moves it closer to how Apple Watch faces work, where every face has its own options. The redesign treats StandBy as a customizable watch face experience for a larger display.
StandBy is not the only part of iOS being adapted for the foldable. The iPhone Duo also runs two apps side by side, and that split is locked at 50/50 with no resizing. The phone has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display, and the full specs are in our launch rundown.
Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo open on October 16, and the phone launches on October 23.
