Mozilla is rolling out its new Firefox design to everyone with Firefox 157, on both desktop and mobile. The update refreshes the colors, icons and themes throughout the browser, and it brings back Compact Mode after users asked for it.
Mozilla announced the official release earlier today. The design has been available in Firefox Nightly for the past few months, and Mozilla says it kept refining the experience based on what testers reported.
Firefox 157 changes how tabs, toolbars and the New Tab page look
The refresh covers the tabs and toolbars people use every day, along with the New Tab page and Private Browsing. Mozilla says the changes come with no cost to browser performance.
The same design language now runs across desktop and mobile, which Mozilla describes as a consistent foundation for future features. When the company first shared its plans, it said Firefox should feel “current, but not generic.”
Mac users have seen a Firefox redesign before. The last big visual overhaul arrived with Firefox 89 for Mac, which also shipped full screen fixes and improved color support.
Mozilla says Firefox has done a lot of growing over the past year, and the design is meant to match. The browser added side by side browsing, a built-in VPN, tracker blocking for faster page loads, and controls over how AI shows up. Firefox for iOS also picked up a built-in ad blocker at the start of September.
Compact Mode returns alongside a theme picker and pinned shortcuts
Compact Mode shrinks the tabs and toolbar so more of the screen goes to the web page. Mozilla added an auto-compact option for smaller screens. The company says it brought the feature back because people trying the new design wanted to fit more into the browser window.
A new theme picker makes it easier to browse different looks for Firefox, with new themes and wallpapers to choose from. On the New Tab page, users decide what appears on their homepage and can pin a shortcut so a site they use all the time stays in place.
Mozilla says the foundations are unchanged. Firefox remains independent and open source, with privacy protections built into the browser. Users also still choose which AI features appear, which model they use and what context it has, the same kind of control Mozilla has been building around Firefox Smart Window.
Firefox 157 is the release that carries all of this, and it is rolling out now to everyone using Firefox on desktop and mobile.
