As Apple prepares to unveil iOS 19 at WWDC 2025, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has confirmed that talks between Apple and Google over integrating Gemini AI into iPhones are nearing completion. With iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro users still waiting on many promised Apple Intelligence features, the upcoming deal marks a critical step in Apple’s AI strategy.
During testimony in the ongoing DOJ antitrust trial, Pichai revealed that he had multiple conversations with Apple CEO Tim Cook throughout 2023 and 2024. The focus was on embedding Gemini into Apple Intelligence as a second AI model option—complementing existing ChatGPT integration that began with iOS 18.2. Apple’s approach has shifted toward offering users more AI flexibility while it struggles to deliver its long-teased Siri overhaul.
At WWDC 2024, Apple introduced a bold vision for Apple Intelligence and a smarter Siri, but much of it turned out to be vaporware. While features like system-wide writing tools and image generation are currently powered by ChatGPT, Apple has yet to deliver its advanced in-house AI assistant. The delay has pushed the company to rely more heavily on third-party partnerships, with Gemini next in line.
Samsung has already integrated Gemini into its Galaxy S25 series, putting pressure on Apple to match the experience. In comparison, Apple Intelligence appears far behind, with its own tools still under development. Adding Gemini could help level the playing field. But, it risks weakening Apple’s image as a self-reliant innovator.
According to Bloomberg, Gemini integration would work similarly to ChatGPT’s current role. It would be embedded directly into Siri and Apple’s writing tools, without requiring users to download the Gemini app separately. Compatible devices would include iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the full iPhone 16 lineup.
A partnership with Google could be formally announced at WWDC 2025, set to begin on June 9, with the Gemini rollout likely tied to iOS 19 and future beta versions. This would mark a major expansion of Apple Intelligence, which aims to eventually support multiple AI models. Apple is also in talks to partner with a Chinese AI firm to enable Apple Intelligence features in China – where U.S. models like ChatGPT and Gemini face regulatory hurdles.
While the Apple-Google deal appears mutually beneficial, it arrives at a precarious time for Google. The DOJ is pushing for remedies after a court ruled that Google Search maintains an illegal monopoly. AI-powered assistants like Gemini now play a central role in the search landscape, and partnerships with companies like Apple are part of Google’s effort to remain dominant across platforms.
If finalized, Gemini’s iOS integration would represent not only a boost for Apple Intelligence, but also a new chapter in Apple’s AI ambitions – one defined more by collaboration than exclusivity. While Apple still aims to eventually deliver a Siri chatbot of its own, users may soon be able to choose between ChatGPT and Gemini for a seamless AI experience across their devices.
