Why Apple named its budget laptop MacBook Neo

Apple’s new budget laptop arrives with an unusual name for the Mac lineup. Instead of simply calling the device “MacBook,” the company introduced it as MacBook Neo, a branding choice that immediately stood out across Apple’s typically straightforward naming scheme.

In an interview following the launch, Apple explained that the name was intentional. According to Mac product marketing director Colleen Novielli, the company wanted a name that felt “fun and friendly, and fresh,” reflecting the overall spirit of the new laptop. The MacBook Neo is positioned as a colorful and accessible entry point into the Mac ecosystem, and Apple felt a new name better captured that energy.

The branding also aligns with the laptop’s design direction. MacBook Neo comes in bright finishes such as Blush, Citrus, Indigo, and Silver, with color extending across the chassis and keyboard. The look is clearly aimed at younger users and students, a group Apple expects will be drawn to the lower price and playful aesthetic.

Apple appears to be treating MacBook Neo as a distinct product category rather than a stripped down version of an existing model. Instead of reusing the classic “MacBook” name, the company opted for branding that signals something new in the lineup. Internally, the idea was to project youth and energy while still keeping the product connected to the MacBook family.

The MacBook Neo itself is designed to hit a much lower price point than other Macs. The laptop starts at $599 in the United States and $499 for education customers, which makes it one of Apple’s most affordable computers ever. Despite the price, it still features an aluminum body, a 13 inch Liquid Retina display, and Apple silicon performance.

Apple achieved the lower price by making several hardware decisions early in development. The MacBook Neo runs on a version of the A18 Pro chip originally designed for the iPhone lineup. It also comes with 8GB of unified memory and storage options up to 512GB. Some premium features found on higher end Macs are absent, and Touch ID is offered as part of a higher storage configuration.

Even with these compromises, Apple emphasized that the goal was not to build a typical budget laptop. Many computers in the same price range rely on plastic construction and basic components. MacBook Neo instead tries to bring Mac design standards and user experience to a much lower price tier.

Apple executives say the product was designed from the ground up to make this possible. Rather than adapting an existing MacBook design, the team built a new platform that could maintain Apple’s design approach while fitting within a strict cost target.

The company also believes the MacBook Neo could expand the Mac’s reach. By lowering the entry price and targeting students and younger buyers, Apple is opening the door for more people to start with a Mac for the first time. The “Neo” branding reinforces that idea of something new and approachable.

Whether the name becomes a long term branding strategy remains unclear. Apple has not indicated whether the Neo label could expand to other products in the future. For now, the company says the name simply reflects the personality of this particular laptop.

MacBook Neo is scheduled to launch on March 11, 2026.
