GameToMac Is a Mac App That Runs 20 Windows Games on Apple Silicon

GameToMac is a Mac app that lets Apple Silicon owners play supported Windows games without building their own compatibility setup. It covers 20 games today, and Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced is the newest addition.

The app runs on an M1 Mac or later with macOS 26 or later and Rosetta installed, as described on the GameToMac website. Intel Macs are not supported. It does not include any games, so you use your own Steam or Battle.net account and there is no GameToMac account to create.

GameToMac Turns Windows Game Setup Into Three Steps

The app is built around guided setup for each game. You choose a title in the GameToMac library, and the app prepares the launchers and compatibility components that game needs:

  1. Download GameToMac, move it to Applications, and open it.
  2. Choose a game, select Get started, and sign in to Steam in the window the app opens.
  3. Install the game, then press Play now.

Diablo II: Resurrected uses Battle.net, and Diablo IV lets you pick either Steam or Battle.net. Controllers work in games that offer controller support.

Updates arrive through the app and wait until your game and Steam are closed. Installed games and saves stay in place, and support for new games is added through app updates once each title has been tested.

The Library Runs From Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced to Counter-Strike 2

The supported games fall into four groups:

  • Rockstar games: Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (The Definitive Edition)
  • Role-playing games: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Elden Ring, Skyrim Special Edition, Hogwarts Legacy, Path of Exile 2, Diablo II: Resurrected, and Diablo IV
  • Strategy games: Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, Age of Empires IV, Age of Mythology: Retold, Company of Heroes 3, Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete Edition, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, and Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour
  • Shooters: Counter-Strike 2 and Overwatch

Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced runs in Story Mode only and needs your own Steam copy plus a Rockstar account. Grand Theft Auto Online is not supported. Red Dead Redemption 2 also covers Story Mode.

Diablo II: Resurrected, Diablo IV, Path of Exile 2, and Hogwarts Legacy need macOS 26.5 or later. Most titles require a purchased copy, while Counter-Strike 2 and Overwatch are free to play on Steam.

Multiplayer varies by title, with matches against Windows players tested on Age of Empires IV and Company of Heroes 3. Elden Ring is offline single-player only.

GameToMac Takes a Narrower Path Than CrossOver

CrossOver has been the usual way to run Windows apps and games on Apple Silicon Macs, because it handles a wide range of Windows software. GameToMac ships setup and compatibility fixes for each supported game instead, so you pick a title from the library rather than configuring a Windows layer yourself.

Elden Ring sits on both sides of that comparison. It is on the GameToMac list, and it was also part of a seven-game test on the base M6 Mac mini that ran it through CrossOver at around 45 FPS at 1440p.

Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit 4 is another route, aimed at developers moving Windows games to Apple platforms, and UTM 5.0.5 added DirectX 12 support for Windows 11 virtual machines in beta in September.

GameToMac is not a launcher for every Windows game, and the project is independent and not affiliated with Apple, Valve, Microsoft, or CodeWeavers.
