Apple could be preparing a notable visual change for the iPhone 17 Pro models with a redesigned Dynamic Island that is more compact than before. According to a recent leak, the pill-shaped cutout has reportedly been reduced from 2 centimeters on the iPhone 16 to around 1.5 centimeters on the upcoming Pro devices.

The claim originates from a screen protector manufacturer that shared images of what they say is the updated cutout. While the source is unverified, the change would represent a 25% size reduction and could give users a little more usable display space. Some photos shared online show a visibly smaller Dynamic Island area, further fueling speculation about Apple’s plans.
Rumors about this adjustment have been circulating throughout the year, though they have not always agreed on timing or scope. Analyst Jeff Pu suggested earlier that the iPhone 17 Pro Max would be the first model to adopt a smaller Dynamic Island, while another leaker pointed to Apple’s development of a metalens Face ID system. This flat lens design integrates transmitter and receiver parts into one component, making the sensor system thinner and reducing the space required on the display.
Conflicting reports have clouded the timeline, however. Some sources claimed the change would apply across the entire iPhone 17 lineup, while others pushed the redesign further out to the iPhone 18 Pro. Adding to the uncertainty, Ming-Chi Kuo said the Dynamic Island would remain largely unchanged, though he left room for the possibility of smaller adjustments.
Apple has not modified the cutout’s size since the Dynamic Island was introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022. If the leak proves accurate, the iPhone 17 Pro will mark the first redesign, with potential software updates also rumored to refresh the feature’s interface. All will become clear at Apple’s “Awe Dropping” event on September 9, where the company will officially unveil the iPhone 17 lineup.
