iPhone driver’s license support expands to North Dakota

Apple is preparing to roll out digital driver’s license support in North Dakota, giving residents the ability to add their state ID directly to the Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch. This marks the next step in Apple’s gradual expansion of digital IDs across the United States since the feature was first introduced in 2022.

According to MacRumors, North Dakota has now been added to Apple’s official list of supported states. The state’s Department of Transportation confirmed that mobile IDs would be available within weeks. Once live, residents will be able to add their license by opening Wallet, tapping the “+” button, and following the on-screen instructions.

The program includes a $5 fee to issue a mobile license. When active, North Dakota residents can use their iPhone or Apple Watch for ID verification at TSA checkpoints in over 250 airports nationwide, as well as for age verification in participating stores, apps, and websites. Since digital IDs are not yet universally accepted, Apple recommends keeping a physical license as backup.

North Dakota joins states such as Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, New Mexico, Iowa, California, Hawaii, and Ohio, along with Puerto Rico, where Apple Wallet driver’s licenses are supported. Additional states including Mississippi, Illinois, Connecticut, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Utah, and West Virginia remain in the implementation phase.

The addition of North Dakota shows the steady progress of Apple Wallet IDs, though adoption has been slower than other Wallet features like Apple Pay or digital keys. Each state must coordinate with Apple and comply with regulatory requirements before launch, which has extended rollout timelines. For users, the expansion moves Apple closer to its vision of replacing physical wallets entirely, with iPhone and Apple Watch serving as all-in-one devices for payments, keys, tickets, and identification.

The feature so far is limited to a few states in the United States. There is no official word on expansion to other countries so far.
