Mac Studio M5 Ultra Splits Eight Displays Across Two Port Groups

Apple’s new Mac Studio with M5 Ultra drives up to eight displays simultaneously by distributing connections across two separate port groups, each capable of handling up to four displays at full resolution and high refresh rates.

The eight-display capability works by treating the M5 Ultra’s ports as two distinct groups. Port group 1 contains the two Thunderbolt ports on the front and the HDMI port on the back; port group 2 contains the four Thunderbolt ports on the back. This architecture allows professionals to connect eight displays at up to 6K resolution at 60Hz or 4K at 144Hz over Thunderbolt, or to use supported display daisy chain or dock configurations on the front Thunderbolt ports.

An 8K display at 60Hz or 4K display at 240Hz consumes the resources of two displays within a single port group, effectively halving the available slots in that group. This means configurations must be planned around peak bandwidth demands rather than simply daisy-chaining every possible monitor.

Video editors and colorists routinely layer multiple reference monitors for timeline editing, color grading, and playback verification; motion graphics artists spread composition windows, timeline, effects browsers, and preview panes across multiple screens; 3D rendering workflows require simultaneous access to viewport displays, material libraries, render previews, and production monitoring.

This capability existed in the M2 Ultra generation, though the M5 refresh brings significantly faster GPU compute to drive all eight displays at higher resolutions without performance degradation. The M5 Ultra GPU includes up to 80 cores with a Neural Accelerator built into each core, delivering up to 4.5x the peak GPU compute for AI tasks compared to M3 Ultra.

Genlock and Thunderbolt 5 Add Broadcast Precision

Mac Studio now supports genlock over USB-C for precise synchronization between displays and professional camera capture, eliminating the need for expensive external sync boxes by synchronizing display refresh with camera frame capture directly over USB-C. This feature is aimed at broadcast and live streaming professionals.

Thunderbolt 5 ports deliver transfer speeds up to 120Gb/s of bandwidth, supporting the high-bandwidth demands of creative workflows and multi-display configurations. The Apple-designed N1 chip adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 to Mac Studio for the first time, modernizing wireless capabilities alongside the display infrastructure.

Pricing and Availability

Mac Studio with M5 Max starts at $2,499; Mac Studio with M5 Ultra starts at $5,499 with 1TB of storage, a $200 increase from the M3 Ultra configuration. Most configurations ship Tuesday, September 22, 2026. The M5 Ultra Mac Studio with 512GB of unified memory arrives in late October 2026; Apple has not yet announced pricing for the highest-memory configuration, though given that upgrading from 96GB to 256GB costs $4,000, the 512GB option will likely exceed $6,000.

The eight-display architecture is straightforward engineering that unlocks workflows Mac Studio’s compact footprint was already capable of supporting; what’s genuinely new is the bandwidth headroom to sustain it without compromise.
