Apple introduced the Mac Studio with M5 Max and the all-new M5 Ultra today, marking the first time the Ultra chip appears in a Mac Studio and adding Neural Accelerators to the Ultra lineup for the first time. The M5 Ultra delivers up to 4.3x faster peak AI compute performance compared to M3 Ultra, along with up to 1.8x faster graphics and up to 1.3x faster CPU speed.
The update arrives after a year-long delay caused by memory chip supply constraints and price increases that forced Apple to postpone the refresh from mid-2026. The previous M3 Ultra Mac Studio, which launched in March 2025, had its starting price raised by $1,300 in June 2026.
M5 Ultra Architecture and Memory Ceiling
The M5 Ultra scales to a 36-core CPU, up to an 80-core GPU, and up to 512GB of unified memory, a critical threshold for running large language models entirely on device. The chip uses UltraFusion technology to connect two dual-die M5 Max chips into a quad-die architecture, a first for Apple Silicon, achieving over 4.4TB/s of inter-die bandwidth with connection density increased by over 6x.
Memory bandwidth reaches up to 1.2TB/s, a 50% increase over the M3 Ultra. Prior M3 Ultra configurations had been limited by supply shortages but the M5 Ultra’s 512GB ceiling restores what Apple previously shelved. The expanded memory and bandwidth enable users to store large datasets locally, run large language models with hundreds of billions of parameters without cloud processing, and increase tokens per second in real-time inference.
The M5 Ultra is the first Apple Silicon system to embed Neural Accelerators in every GPU core, dedicated hardware designed specifically to accelerate AI workloads.
Performance Benchmarks and Real-World AI Tasks
Testing conducted by Apple in July 2026 demonstrates substantial performance gains across AI and creative workflows:
- LLM prompt processing: Up to 10.7x faster than Mac Studio with M1 Max, and 3.9x faster than M4 Max in LM Studio.
- Text-to-image generation: Up to 7.4x faster than M1 Max, and up to 3.5x faster than M4 Max.
- Video editing: Up to 5.3x faster Magic Mask performance in Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve Studio compared to M1 Max, and up to 3x faster than M4 Max.
Multi-machine clustering via Thunderbolt 5 and RDMA support allows users to connect up to four Mac Studio systems into a shared memory pool, delivering up to 3x faster AI inference than a single system.
Connectivity and Storage Upgrades
The new Mac Studio adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for the first time, alongside Thunderbolt 5. A next-generation SSD architecture built on PCIe Gen 6 delivers up to 2x faster storage performance compared to the previous generation.
M5 Max Configuration and Pricing
The Mac Studio with M5 Max features an 18-core CPU, up to a 40-core GPU with Neural Accelerators built into each core, and up to 128GB of unified memory. Pricing starts at $2,499 in the U.S., with education pricing at $2,299.
M5 Ultra Configuration and Availability
The Mac Studio with M5 Ultra starts at $5,499 in the U.S. And $5,099 for education. Customers can pre-order beginning August 25, 2026, on apple.com/store and in the Apple Store app across 30 countries and regions, with availability starting September 22, 2026. The configuration with 512GB of unified memory is expected to arrive in late October.
