Apple has released macOS 27 Golden Gate beta 7, continuing a weekly release pattern in the final stretch before the operating system’s September public launch. The build arrives just one week after beta 6.
Performance and System Refinement
With only a couple more beta releases expected before September, Apple will be focused on performance refinement and stability rather than introducing major new features.
Golden Gate continues to polish foundational Mac technologies across multiple dimensions: quicker AirDrop transfers, faster network file browsing, improved syncing in Messages, and better Spotlight search suggestions. Window positioning is now more consistent across external displays, reducing unwanted app and market repositioning. The system also added more high-resolution and high-refresh-rate display modes for external monitors.
Liquid Glass Refinement and UI Consistency
Apple is revisiting Liquid Glass in Golden Gate with new user control and rendering improvements. A Liquid Glass slider lets users choose between maximum translucency or a more opaque tinted version for increased legibility; the updated rendering diffuses complex content more effectively, with darkened edges and brighter highlights offering greater depth and visual separation in the interface.
Apps now feature uniform toolbars to make text headings and controls easier to read, and all windows use the same corner radius for improved visual consistency across the system.
Siri AI and Intelligence Features
Siri AI is an overhauled version of Siri that performs much like ChatGPT or Claude rather than the prior voice assistant. It can hold full back-and-forth conversations, access your personal data, and complete complex tasks by searching across Mail, Messages, Notes, Reminders, Calendar, and other apps.
Siri AI is available in English and will expand to other languages in the future. Unlike on iPhone and iPad, Siri AI is available in the European Union on Mac, allowing EU users to bypass the Digital Markets Act delay that affects other Apple Intelligence features. Siri AI and new Apple Intelligence features are not available in China.
Hardware Requirements
macOS Golden Gate marks the definitive end of Intel Mac support; the operating system runs exclusively on Apple silicon Macs with an M1 chip or newer. Some features carry stricter requirements: improved dictation and custom Siri voices require an M3 or later chip with at least 12GB of RAM.
Parental Controls and Child Safety Overhaul
Apple redesigned Screen Time and introduced new child safety features in Golden Gate. Parents can see the apps and websites children are visiting and make adjustments. Time Allowances let parents set how much time children can spend on app categories like Entertainment, Games, and Social Media, with customizable schedules based on time and day.
Ask to Buy and Ask to Browse require kids to request parental permission for every app download and new website visited in Safari; parents can manage contacts and require permission before kids contact someone new. Communication Safety now blocks gore and violence in addition to nudity in Messages and FaceTime.
