Microsoft blames Apple for delay of Xbox mobile store amid Epic legal fight

The anticipated Xbox mobile web store, initially slated for July 2024, hasn’t materialized. It seems Apple’s stringent App Store policies are the core reason for this significant delay. Microsoft recently weighed in, filing an amicus brief in support of Epic Games’ legal battle against Apple, revealing the extent of their frustration.

Microsoft plans to launch mobile gaming store to compete with Apple and Google.

Microsoft’s brief directly points to Apple for “stymying” their efforts to launch an alternative mobile storefront. They contend that even as legal rulings begin to loosen Apple’s grip on payment mechanisms, their anti-steering policies continue to restrict developers’ communication with users and inflate economic costs. Microsoft envisioned its Xbox mobile store as a direct path for users to purchase in-app items off-app, but Apple’s resistance has blocked this.

A major concern for Microsoft is the instability surrounding Apple’s appeal against the recent injunction. Despite the current ruling technically allowing the Xbox mobile store, Microsoft is hesitant to commit resources. They fear launching the store only to have to pull it if Apple secures a temporary stay or wins its appeal. Microsoft explicitly notes that Apple has made no argument that its policy changes can’t be undone, highlighting the risk of a reversal.

Beyond the dedicated mobile store, Apple’s policies have also impacted the existing Xbox mobile app. Microsoft has long aimed to let users both buy and stream games within the same iOS app. However, Apple’s restrictions have historically forced a fragmented experience. Though Microsoft recently enabled in-app purchases for games and DLC, they had to remove the remote play option to comply with Apple’s guidelines, further showcasing the limitations imposed on integrated mobile gaming experiences.

This ongoing legal saga continues to dictate the pace of innovation and consumer choice within the mobile gaming ecosystem.
