Microsoft Surface price increase makes Macs cheaper in 2026

Microsoft has raised prices across its entire Surface lineup, and the shift is significant enough to change how these devices compete with Apple’s Mac lineup. Entry level Surface PCs now start above $1,000, while flagship models begin at $1,500. In several cases, pricing has increased by as much as $500 compared to original 2024 launch prices.

The updated pricing is already live on Microsoft’s online store and is expected to roll out across retailers. Microsoft attributes the increase to rising memory and component costs, as the ongoing RAM shortage continues to impact the broader PC industry. With AI data centers consuming large amounts of memory supply, consumer hardware is seeing direct cost pressure.

The impact spans both Surface Pro tablets and Surface Laptop models. The 12 inch Surface Pro now starts at $1,049, up from $799, while the 13 inch Surface Pro has climbed to $1,499 from its original $999 entry price. On the laptop side, the 13 inch Surface Laptop now starts at $1,149, and the 13.8 inch model has jumped to $1,499. The 15 inch version now begins at $1,599, continuing a steady rise from its earlier pricing tiers.

This reshapes the competitive landscape. Surface devices that once undercut Apple’s MacBook Air are now significantly more expensive. A comparable MacBook Air configuration is now hundreds of dollars cheaper than a similarly positioned Surface Laptop 7, reversing Microsoft’s earlier value advantage.

The gap becomes even more noticeable at the high end. A fully configured Surface Laptop 15 inch with Snapdragon X Elite, 64GB RAM, and 1TB storage now costs around $3,649. That places it above premium MacBook Pro configurations with similar memory and storage, despite Apple offering stronger performance in many scenarios.

This is the second consecutive year of Surface price increases, following earlier adjustments in 2025. The cumulative effect pushes Surface firmly into a higher pricing tier, even before the next generation of devices arrives.

Looking ahead, Microsoft is expected to refresh its Surface lineup later this year. If memory costs remain elevated, these higher starting prices are likely to continue. For buyers, that makes timing purchases around discounts more important, especially as the price gap between Surface and Mac continues to widen.
