Spotify’s long-awaited lossless audio could be part of a new ‘Music Pro’ add-on

There have been rumors and code discoveries suggesting that Spotify might be introducing lossless audio through a new feature called “Music Pro”.

What is lossless audio?

Lossless audio, in simple terms, refers to a format that preserves the original quality of the recording without compression that can degrade audio fidelity. Unlike traditional compressed formats like MP3, which sacrifice some audio data to reduce file size, lossless audio aims to deliver sound as close as possible to what artists and producers intended in the studio.

Spotify might add additional features to Music Pro besides lossless audio

Back in February 2021, Spotify first announced “Spotify HiFi,” a premium tier promising lossless audio quality. This sent shivers down the spines of audiophiles who craved CD-quality music on the popular streaming platform. However, the launch window of late 2021 came and went with no sign of HiFi.

A Reddit @Hypixely recently found clues within the Spotify app code hinting at a new “Music Pro” add-on. This discovery has reignited hope for lossless audio. The code references support high-fidelity formats like 24-bit/44.1kHz FLAC files, a significant step up from Spotify’s current compressed audio.

The code also suggests features like DJ remix tools and personalized audio adjustments, making it a potential goldmine for audio enthusiasts and creators alike.

If the company were to launch a ‘Music Pro’ add-on with lossless audio capabilities, it could signify a strategic shift towards capturing a more audiophile-centric market segment. By offering a tier that prioritizes audio quality, the company could attract music enthusiasts who are willing to pay a premium for superior sound reproduction.

The introduction of ‘Music Pro’ could also have broader implications for the music streaming industry. Competitors may respond with their enhancements to audio quality, fostering healthy competition and ultimately benefiting consumers who value high-fidelity streaming options.

While there’s no official confirmation from Spotify yet, these signs suggest lossless audio might be on the way. It’s worth noting that other streaming services like Apple Music and Amazon Music already offer lossless audio options.
