WhatsApp is rolling out a collection of new features across its apps, making it easier to use the messaging service on more devices and in more situations. The latest update introduces direct account registration on iPad, a redesigned experience for CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in PDF annotation tools, and a new way to share music to Status.
Sign Up for WhatsApp Directly on iPad
One of the biggest additions is the ability to create a WhatsApp account directly from the iPad app. When WhatsApp launched its native iPad app last year, users still needed to create an account on a phone before linking the iPad as a companion device. With this update, new users can register from the iPad app itself and complete the setup process without first linking another device.
This makes the iPad experience much more independent and lowers the barrier for people who primarily use Apple’s tablet.
CarPlay and Android Auto Get a Fresh Look
WhatsApp has also refreshed its interfaces for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The updated experience lets users:
- Listen to incoming messages
- Reply using voice controls
- Make WhatsApp calls
- View recent call history
- Quickly access favorite contacts
The redesign is intended to make common tasks easier to access while keeping interactions hands-free during driving.
PDFs Can Now Be Opened and Annotated
WhatsApp is also improving document sharing on desktop and web. Instead of downloading PDF files before viewing them, users can now open PDFs directly inside WhatsApp. The update also adds lightweight editing tools, allowing you to highlight text and add annotations without leaving the conversation.
These PDF features are powered by Adobe Acrobat and are available on WhatsApp Web and the desktop apps.
Share Music to WhatsApp Status
WhatsApp Status now supports music sharing from Apple Music and Spotify. When sharing a song, WhatsApp creates a Status update that lets your contacts see what you’re listening to without manually adding screenshots or text. The feature offers a quicker way to share music directly from supported streaming apps.
Earlier this month, we argued that WhatsApp was slowly drifting back toward the MSN Messenger era, where usernames, profile customization, and self-expression became central to the experience. Adding music sharing to Status only strengthens that comparison, giving users another way to express themselves without ever leaving the app.
