YouTube is moving the Subscriptions tab out of the bottom bar in the YouTube app for iPhone and Android. It now sits at the top of the Home tab, next to new feeds for Live, Music and Movies & TV.
YouTube announced the redesign as the first in a series of updates to its Home experience. It arrives with custom feeds, which are rolling out first to signed-in viewers in the US. The change applies on both iPhone and Android.
Subscriptions moves into the top bar of the Home tab as Subs
The Subscriptions tab is now called Subs and has moved into the top bar of the Home tab, which YouTube says keeps favorite creators front and center. Anyone used to tapping the bottom bar for subscriptions will now need to reach for the top of the screen.
The top bar also gets dedicated feeds for Live, Music and Movies & TV. The Movies & TV feed only shows up if you have active subscriptions, such as Primetime Channels.
Custom feeds let you describe what you want to watch
Tap the plus button at the top of the Home feed and describe a topic, channels or a vibe. YouTube’s example is “help me unwind after work with guided meditations under 10 minutes”. YouTube then builds a new feed tailored to your interests that you can explore.
Saved custom feeds sit at the top of your screen so you can jump back into them. A prompt box at the top of each feed lets you change what it shows, and feeds you create on mobile sync to desktop when you are signed into the same Google account.
Free users can save up to three active custom feeds. YouTube Premium members can save up to eight.
Custom feeds are available to signed-in viewers in the US who are 13 or older and have search history turned on. They work in English on both mobile and desktop.
YouTube says it is working on bringing custom feeds to more users and regions.
