Apple releases macOS 27 Golden Gate beta 1 for developers

Apple has released the first developer beta of macOS 27 Golden Gate following its WWDC 2026 keynote, giving developers early access to the next major Mac software update before its public launch later this year.

macOS 27 Golden Gate beta 1

macOS 27 Golden Gate introduces Apple’s new Siri AI experience, Apple Intelligence enhancements, Liquid Glass refinements, performance improvements, and a wide range of developer-focused changes. The first beta is now available through the Apple Developer Program, while a public beta is expected to launch in July.

One of the most notable changes in macOS 27 is Apple’s continued transition away from Intel. The release notes reveal that macOS now highlights Intel-based apps that will become incompatible with macOS 28, helping users identify software that will need updates or replacements. System Settings can also list unsupported Intel apps and suggest Apple silicon-native alternatives where available.

Apple has also introduced a new command-line tool that enables support for certain legacy Intel-based games during the beta period. The feature is designed specifically for older games and is not intended for general Intel application compatibility. The company also notes that Rosetta is no longer automatically restored after upgrading to macOS 27, signaling Apple’s continued push toward a fully Apple silicon ecosystem.

For developers, macOS 27 Golden Gate adds new frameworks and APIs, including DiskImageKit for managing disk images, NSRefreshController for pull-to-refresh functionality in AppKit applications, Metal 4.1 support, updated StoreKit APIs, and expanded SwiftUI capabilities. Apple has also introduced localized Background Assets, allowing apps to download language-specific content only when needed to reduce storage usage.

Apple Intelligence continues to expand across the platform. HomeKit Secure Video recordings can now be processed on-device and through Private Cloud Compute for video descriptions and search, while Siri AI gains deeper system integration throughout macOS.

As with any first beta release, there are several known issues. Apple lists bugs affecting Safari, Siri, Mail, Messages, Music, News, Writing Tools, window management, and software updates. Some users may also encounter issues with fullscreen apps, Smart Mailboxes, Siri actions, and certain Apple Intelligence features.

Developers interested in testing macOS 27 Golden Gate beta 1 should install it on a secondary Mac whenever possible. Early beta software often includes performance issues, app compatibility problems, and unfinished features that may impact daily workflows.

Apple is expected to release additional beta updates throughout the summer ahead of the public release of macOS 27 Golden Gate this fall.
