Apple’s 20th anniversary iPhone could launch with smart AirPods and a foldable successor

Apple is reportedly preparing one of the most ambitious product lineups in its history for 2027, the year that marks the 20th anniversary of the iPhone. According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is planning a redesigned anniversary iPhone, a second-generation foldable iPhone, and a new version of AirPods equipped with cameras and AI-powered visual awareness features.

While Apple’s plans could still change, the reported roadmap suggests that 2027 may become one of the company’s biggest hardware years since the original iPhone debuted in 2007.

The centerpiece of Apple’s anniversary celebration is expected to be an all-new iPhone design. Gurman reports that Apple is working on a premium anniversary model featuring a nearly edge-to-edge display and curved glass that wraps around the sides of the device. The design would represent one of the most significant visual changes to the iPhone in years as Apple continues its push toward a display with minimal visible borders.

The anniversary iPhone models are reportedly being developed under the codenames V73 and V74 and are expected to succeed the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. They are said to retain similar overall sizes while introducing the new design language. Some reports have speculated that Apple could skip directly to an “iPhone 20” branding strategy in recognition of the product’s 20th anniversary, though no official naming has been confirmed.

Alongside the anniversary iPhone, Apple is also reportedly planning a second-generation foldable iPhone. If Apple’s first foldable arrives before then as expected, the 2027 model could represent a major refinement of the company’s foldable smartphone strategy.

Powering both the anniversary iPhone and the foldable successor is expected to be a new 2-nanometer chip currently known internally as “Naxos.” The processor will likely become the A21 Pro, continuing Apple’s annual silicon advancements. Looking even further ahead, Bloomberg reports that Apple is already planning an A22 Pro chip for 2028 that could be manufactured using an advanced 1.4-nanometer process.

Another major product reportedly arriving in late 2027 is a new generation of AirPods featuring built-in cameras. These cameras are not intended for taking photos or recording video. Instead, they would function as visual sensors that help Siri understand the wearer’s surroundings.

The camera-equipped AirPods could become Apple’s first AI-focused wearable. By combining cameras with Visual Intelligence technology, Siri may be able to identify nearby objects, answer questions about the environment, provide contextual reminders, and offer more intelligent navigation assistance. Apple already offers similar capabilities through Visual Intelligence on iPhone, and the company is expected to expand those features significantly over the next few years.

Reports indicate that Apple originally targeted a 2026 launch for the smart AirPods but delayed the product due to ongoing development work related to Apple Intelligence, Siri, and visual AI models. The company reportedly needed additional time to improve object recognition capabilities and create a more reliable user experience.

The AirPods are expected to maintain a design similar to current AirPods Pro models, with the cameras integrated into the stems. Some reports also suggest Apple could include visual indicators that notify people nearby when the sensors are actively being used for AI-powered features.

Beyond the iPhone and AirPods, Bloomberg also says Apple continues to develop smart glasses that could arrive around the same timeframe. If those plans remain on track, 2027 could mark the beginning of a broader ecosystem of AI-powered wearable devices designed to work alongside the iPhone.
