iPhone Ultra: Features, Price and Release Date

Apple has been working toward a foldable iPhone for years, and the device is now widely expected to arrive this fall. The iPhone Ultra is expected to be announced in early September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models, reportedly with a book-style fold, a 7.8-inch inner display, and a starting price that would make even Pro Max buyers wince. Here is everything credibly reported so far.

Crease-free display separates it from all competitors

The single biggest technical achievement Apple is said to be claiming is a 7.8-inch inner display with no visible crease. Most major foldables on the market today, including Samsung’s Galaxy Fold series, have a crease running down the center of the screen where the hinge bends. Apple reportedly pursued eliminating it “regardless of cost,” developing a new material property to make it disappear. If the reports hold up and it works in real-world use, this alone would separate iPhone Ultra from every competitor currently on shelves.

The inner display’s size would put it in iPad mini territory. When unfolded, the screen is reportedly wide enough and tall enough to function like a compact tablet, and the 4:3 aspect ratio of the inner display reflects that. This would be a meaningful shift in how the device is used day to day compared to a standard iPhone, and it is the central argument for the trade-offs Apple is said to have made elsewhere in the design.

Design: titanium, sub-5mm thickness, wider cover display

The iPhone Ultra is said to take design cues from the iPhone 18 Pro lineage: a titanium border, aggressively thin profile, and an overall build that has been described by insiders as resembling two iPhone Airs stacked together when folded, but thinner. Battery: 4,883mAh split across two cells

The battery is reported to be split across two cells to fit the foldable body: 1,921mAh and 2,962mAh, totaling 4,883mAh. The two-cell design would be a necessary engineering compromise rather than a performance one. The total capacity is said to be competitive with current flagship Android foldables and to sit above what the iPhone 18 Pro Max carries in a standard slab form factor. Real-world battery life at launch will depend heavily on how the large inner display and vapor chamber interact under typical usage patterns, and those numbers will not be available until reviews publish around launch.

Software: iOS 27 with foldable-specific features, no iPadOS windowing

iPhone Ultra is reported to run iOS 27, not iPadOS. When the inner display is open and in use, the device is said not to gain access to iPadOS 26’s full-fledged windowing or Stage Manager features.
