CarPlay didn’t headline WWDC 2026, but it picked up more changes in iOS 27 than it has in several releases. The public beta has been available since July 17, and the full release is on track for September, targeting iPhone 11 and newer. Here’s everything new, ranked by how much it will actually affect your daily drive.
Siri AI and conversational search
Siri AI is the biggest addition, and it works the same way in CarPlay as it does on iPhone. You can now ask for a specific address buried in an email or text message, and Siri will find it and start routing without you touching the screen. It handles general questions the way ChatGPT or Google Gemini does, which is a step up from the keyword-matching assistant CarPlay drivers have relied on for years.
Every conversation you have with Siri through CarPlay syncs back to the Siri app on your iPhone, marked with a car icon so you can find it later. That’s convenient if you want to revisit something you searched mid-commute. The catch is that Siri AI requires Apple Intelligence hardware, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16, or newer. Owners of older devices get the same Siri they had in iOS 26 and will need to stay on that release to use it.
Audio scrubber in Now Playing
If you listen to podcasts in the car, this matters. CarPlay’s Now Playing screen now includes an audio scrubber you can drag to skip through a track, something that should have existed from day one. Before this, jumping to a specific point in a long podcast meant either fumbling with your phone or hammering steering wheel controls. The same screen also gets a new MiniPlayer in the top-right corner of media apps, showing album art and playback controls in place of the old waveform icon.
Natural language navigation in Apple Maps
Apple extended natural language search to navigation in Apple Maps, and it works in CarPlay too. You can tell Siri you want directions that avoid toll roads or highways and it will route accordingly. All app categories can now offer a voice control option, using a template Apple designed for voice-driven conversations. For Maps specifically, navigation apps can also share route data with the vehicle to flag EV charging stops based on your car’s range.
Video app support for when you’re parked
Developers can now build CarPlay apps with video browsing and playback capabilities. Shift into drive and playback drops to audio only, which is the right call. The problem is that video support requires car manufacturers to enable it on the vehicle side, and no automakers have announced plans to do so. This feature exists on paper in iOS 27, but don’t expect to use it anytime soon. It was originally announced for iOS 26.

Wireless CarPlay reliability improvements
Apple says wireless CarPlay in iOS 27 is more reliable overall, with improved GPS location accuracy and better navigation heading detection. These are the kinds of fixes that don’t make press releases but matter a lot if you’ve ever watched your car’s position drift on the map or had your heading flip the wrong direction at a junction. Improved GPS accuracy applies to wired connections as well.
Wallpapers and updated icons
iOS 27’s wallpapers use the same stylized “27” design that appears across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 Golden Gate. CarPlay gets more options than any of those platforms: 18 color variants, which is a larger selection than what’s available on iPhone or iPad. The new wallpapers match the stock iOS 27 aesthetic, so the dashboard will look at home alongside the rest of the updated interface.
The Liquid Glass icon redesign that iOS 27 brought to iPhone extends to CarPlay as well. Apps like Maps and Weather get the updated look, and CarPlay also supports larger, more interactive content thumbnails across the interface. The overall result is a CarPlay home screen that looks noticeably more polished than iOS 26.
iOS 27 is expected to release in September for iPhone 11 and newer. Siri AI features require iPhone 15 Pro or later and will launch in English first, with additional language support to follow.
