TV Time users have been searching for a replacement ever since Whip Media shut down the popular TV and movie tracking app in July to focus on AI initiatives. Now, there’s finally a successor built by someone who knows the platform better than anyone else.
Bingers, a new TV and movie tracking app from TV Time co-founder Antonio Pinto, is now available for iPhone and Android. Rather than creating another simple watchlist app, Pinto says his goal is to bring back the community-driven experience that made TV Time popular with millions of users.
TV Time had more than 26 million installs before it was discontinued, and its shutdown sparked frustration across its community. More than 28,000 users signed a petition asking Whip Media to keep the service alive through subscriptions or crowdfunding, but the company proceeded with its plans to shut it down.
A Familiar Experience for TV Time Users
Like TV Time, Bingers lets users keep track of TV shows and movies they’ve watched, build watchlists, and discover new content to stream. It also includes a viewing calendar that shows upcoming episodes and release dates.
Where the app aims to stand out is its social features.
Users can create profiles, comment on individual episodes and movies, react with emojis, post GIFs and images, rate episodes, and vote for their favorite characters. These community features were among TV Time’s biggest draws and are something many competing tracking apps never fully replicated.
According to Pinto, the active community around TV Time remained one of the platform’s greatest strengths even after years of limited updates.
You Can Import Your TV Time Data
One of the biggest concerns following TV Time’s shutdown was losing years of viewing history.
Bingers supports importing archives exported from TV Time before the service closed. Users who downloaded their GDPR data export can restore their watch history, watchlists, and other supported information instead of starting over.
Those who didn’t save their data, or who are new to TV tracking apps, can simply create a new account and begin building their library from scratch.
Built to Avoid TV Time’s Problems
Pinto says Bingers has been designed differently behind the scenes to reduce operating costs. Instead of relying heavily on cloud infrastructure, much of a user’s library, including watchlists and viewing calendars, is stored and processed on their device. This reduces server load while helping the app scale more efficiently as its user base grows.
The company also plans to monetize differently than TV Time did. Initially, users will be able to voluntarily contribute toward server costs. Pinto has also hinted at future community-focused monetization ideas but hasn’t shared additional details yet.
Another Option for TV Tracking
Several apps have emerged following TV Time’s closure, but Bingers is unique because it’s being built by one of the people who originally helped create TV Time.
For former users who primarily miss the app’s social discussions, episode reactions, and community interactions, Bingers aims to recreate much of what made the original platform stand out while continuing to add new features.
The app is available now as a free download for both iPhone and Android.
