The iPhone Duo’s cost structure is coming into focus, and the display looks like the real driver. According to a claim making the rounds this week, Apple is paying Samsung Display around $250 for every single foldable panel that goes into the device.
The claim comes from Instant Digital, a leaker with a long track record on Apple’s supply chain, who posted on Weibo that Apple and Samsung Display signed a three-year exclusive supply agreement covering the iPhone Duo and future foldable models. This is a leak rather than a confirmed figure, since Apple doesn’t break down its bill of materials publicly, but the sourcing lines up with how Instant Digital has reported on Apple’s display suppliers before.
The Foldable Panel Is Reportedly One of iPhone Duo’s Priciest Parts
That price tag tracks with what Apple actually built here. The iPhone Duo’s inner display is a custom-engineered stack built to survive hundreds of thousands of folds without a visible crease, and that kind of engineering doesn’t come cheap.
Apple has talked in-depth about the display during the iPhone Duo announcement about how much went into that inner panel. The company describes a scratch-resistant coating over a nano-textured polymer cover layer, high-strength glass above and below the folding panel itself, and custom adhesives that let the internal layers slide past each other like pages in a book to relieve bend stress. A titanium plate underneath adds further reinforcement.
Our Take
I don’t think $250 per panel is shocking once you look at what’s actually inside that display stack. Foldable glass, custom adhesive layers, and a hinge assembly with over 100 parts add up fast, and Apple tends to pay a premium for components it can’t easily source from more than one supplier. What I find more interesting is the three-year exclusivity. That’s Apple locking in Samsung Display as its only foldable panel source through at least a couple of future iPhone Duo generations, which tells me Apple isn’t expecting serious competition on foldable OLED yield anytime soon. If this leak holds up, I’d expect the panel to stay one of the most expensive line items on every teardown report that comes out after launch.
