Apple plans to rename Apple ID to “Apple Account”

According to reports, Apple is planning to rename its widely-used “Apple ID” to “Apple Account” sometime this year. It is expected that this change will happen alongside the launch of iOS 18 and macOS 15.

What is an Apple ID?

For more than a decade, the Apple ID has served as a single sign-on for all things Apple. It enables users to access a wide range of services such as the App Store, iTunes Store, iCloud, Apple Music, Apple Pay, iMessage, and FaceTime.

Why is Apple rebranding “Apple ID” to “Apple Account”?

The reasons behind this rebranding haven’t been officially disclosed by Apple, but some speculate it could be a strategic move to:

  • Simplify user experience: “Apple Account” might be seen as more intuitive and clear, reflecting the broader range of services the account encompasses beyond just identification.
  • Redefine or expand the scope of services: The new name could hint at Apple potentially adding more features or functionalities to the account in the future.

What could this mean for users?

For users, a rebranding from Apple ID to ‘Apple Account’ is unlikely to bring about significant functional changes. The core functionalities and features tied to the account are likely to remain the same. Your ‘Apple Account’ would still serve as your central hub for managing purchases, accessing iCloud services, and safeguarding your personal information.

However, the name change could signal a shift in Apple’s approach to how it presents its services to users. A unified branding under the ‘Apple Account’ umbrella could make it easier for users to understand the breadth of services tied to their Apple credentials and reinforce the idea of a seamless experience across devices and platforms.

If the rumors are true, the rebrand is expected to coincide with the release of iOS 18 and macOS 15 later this year. This suggests that users might see the new “Apple Account” terminology reflected in system applications and potentially on Apple’s website upon the update.
