Apple Releases tvOS 27 Beta 3 With Apple Intelligence and HomeKit Improvements

Apple has released tvOS 27 Beta 3 to developers, bringing another round of updates ahead of the upcoming public beta. While this release doesn’t introduce major new features for Apple TV users, it expands Apple Intelligence capabilities in the Home app, improves app storage management, and delivers a wide range of developer enhancements and bug fixes.

Like the latest iOS, iPadOS, and macOS betas, tvOS 27 Beta 3 is primarily a refinement release. The update focuses on improving system stability while adding new APIs for StoreKit, SwiftUI, UIKit, and VideoToolbox, giving developers more tools as Apple prepares tvOS 27 for its public release.

Apple Intelligence Comes to HomeKit Secure Video

The biggest user-facing addition in tvOS 27 Beta 3 is support for Apple Intelligence in the Home app. When Apple Intelligence is enabled, HomeKit Secure Video recordings can now be processed using both on-device intelligence and Private Cloud Compute to generate video descriptions and improve search results.

This allows users to search recorded footage more naturally while keeping privacy at the forefront through Apple’s hybrid on-device and cloud processing approach.

Apple has also introduced localized asset packs through the new Background Assets framework. Apps can now download only the resources needed for a user’s preferred language, reducing storage requirements and improving installation efficiency. As part of this transition, Apple has deprecated On Demand Resources and the NSBundleResourceRequest API in favor of Background Assets.

More StoreKit and SwiftUI Improvements

tvOS 27 Beta 3 also expands StoreKit with support for subscription Bundles and subscription Suites, making it easier for developers to offer grouped subscriptions. New transaction types for volume purchases and additional APIs for Advanced Commerce provide more flexibility for subscription-based apps.

SwiftUI receives another round of enhancements, including automatic HTTP caching for AsyncImage, a redesigned @State implementation that reduces unnecessary initialization, the new TabsPickerStyle for tab-based navigation, customizable text input border shapes, and faster @ContentBuilder type checking.

Elsewhere, Apple has introduced new Swift file system APIs, UIKit improvements for state restoration, and VideoToolbox enhancements that add support for 1.5x low-latency super resolution scaling and frame interpolation for source resolutions up to 1080p.

tvOS 27 Beta 3 Bug Fixes

Apple has resolved several issues affecting previous beta releases, including:

  • Fixed a Foundation issue that incorrectly encoded valid percent-escaped URLs.
  • Fixed the Game Center Access Point completion handler not being invoked.
  • Fixed a Metal rendering issue that could incorrectly clamp texture sampling results.
  • Fixed a RealityKit rendering bug that caused opaque materials to appear transparent when using OpacityComponent.
  • Fixed multiple StoreKit Testing issues involving subscriptions, refunds, pricing, transaction updates, and purchase testing.
  • Fixed several SwiftUI bugs affecting file export dialogs, layout calculations, sheet and popover behavior, button spacing, and @State compilation.
  • Fixed a System framework conflict involving the new Swift stat() APIs.

Known Issues in tvOS 27 Beta 3

Apple notes that several issues remain in the latest beta.

When launching the Apple TV app, the sidebar focus highlight may briefly appear flattened before rendering normally.

Videos that are muted or unmuted during playback may not automatically enable or disable subtitles as expected. Until Apple updates the feature, subtitles must be managed manually through the playback controls or the Accessibility settings.

Apple also lists ongoing issues affecting Metal on Apple 10 GPU family devices, RealityKit rendering, Siri entity resolution, Swift Charts, SwiftUI button tinting, USDKit, and several other developer frameworks.

Should You Install tvOS 27 Beta 3?

If you’re already testing tvOS 27, Beta 3 is a worthwhile update that improves stability while expanding Apple Intelligence capabilities for HomeKit Secure Video and introducing useful enhancements for developers.

For most Apple TV users, however, there are few noticeable day-to-day changes. Unless you’re developing or testing apps, waiting for the public beta is still the better choice.
