tvOS 27 Beta 6 Released as September Launch Approaches

Apple seeded tvOS 27 beta 6 to developers today, just one week after beta 5 rolled out. The update can be downloaded and installed through the Settings app on Apple TV with a free developer account.

The weekly release cadence marks a shift from the unusual three-week gap between beta 4 and beta 5, suggesting Apple is moving into the final stretch of testing. With only a couple more betas expected before release, the company appears confident in tvOS 27’s stability as September approaches.

What’s New in tvOS 27

tvOS 27 brings a modest set of features compared to the broader iOS 27 update, with most improvements focused on media and usability rather than fundamental system overhauls.

  • Redesigned Podcasts app with video podcast playback, new sidebar navigation, and support for episode and show artwork from creators
  • AutoMix in Music app, adding DJ-style transitions between songs
  • Hi-Res Lossless Audio for Apple Music on compatible external speaker outputs connected to Apple TV 4K
  • Larger text options for improved readability
  • More responsive Control Center
  • Faster AirPlay performance from other Apple devices
  • Smoother app animations and transitions
  • AppleCare coverage details now visible in Settings
  • Software updates for Apple TV can now be downloaded and installed through the Home app, eliminating the need to wait for updates when you want to watch

Hardware Compatibility and the Siri AI Question

tvOS 27 drops support for the Apple TV HD (2015) and Apple TV 4K first generation (2017), leaving only the 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TV 4K models supported. This marks a significant pruning of the compatible device lineup.

Notably absent from tvOS 27 is Siri AI, a feature rumored to arrive in this generation of software. Apple is reportedly holding this capability for new Apple TV 4K hardware launching in September 2026, effectively using the feature as a driver for hardware upgrades. The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K is expected to ship with an A17 Pro chip built on a 3-nanometer process, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, full Apple Intelligence support, and Wi-Fi 7. Without compatible hardware, users on existing Apple TV models will not gain access to the overhauled Siri experience.
