In a significant move towards standardization, Apple has unveiled a USB-C charging case for its AirPods Pro 2. This change aligns with the transition from the Lightning connector to USB-C in the upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro.
AirPods 2 with USB-C charging case will remain priced at $249
Apple recently introduced the AirPods Pro 2, which remain unchanged in terms of hardware. However, they now ship with a USB-C charging case, replacing the previous Lightning connector.
Why USB-C matters
USB-C has become the industry standard for various Apple devices, including Mac, iPad, and even the Siri Remote. With the iPhone set to adopt USB-C, it makes sense for the AirPods to follow suit. This means users can conveniently use the same cable for charging across multiple Apple products.
If you’re purchasing new AirPods Pro 2, they will come with the USB-C charging case included. Existing AirPods Pro 2 owners need not worry, as Apple will also sell the new USB-C charging case separately. However, it’s essential to note that this case is exclusively compatible with the 2nd generation AirPods Pro. There’s no word yet on a USB-C charging case for the AirPods 3, and the 1st generation AirPods Pro will not fit in the new case.
AirPods Pro 2 features
Apple’s second-generation AirPods Pro, touted as the “most advanced AirPods ever,” are powered by the H2 chip, delivering impressive audio upgrades like enhanced Active Noise Cancellation, improved Transparency mode, and Personalized Spatial Audio. The design is similar but now features touch controls on the stem for volume and media playback, along with a better skin-detect sensor.
The H2 chip brings significant sound quality improvements with a new low-distortion audio driver and custom amplifier. Transparency Mode has been refined for better noise reduction, and Personalized Spatial Audio customizes the listening experience based on the user’s head and ear shape, while noise cancellation is twice as effective as the previous generation.
The redesigned charging case is sweat and water-resistant, includes a lanyard loop, a built-in speaker, and Precision Finding for locating misplaced earbuds. Battery life is extended, offering an extra 1.5 hours of listening time compared to the previous version, totaling up to six hours with Active Noise Cancellation. The case provides four additional charges, providing a total of up to 30 hours of listening time.
Pricing and availability
The AirPods Pro 2 with the USB-C charging case remain priced at $249, maintaining the same level of quality and convenience Apple users have come to expect.
