Apple to launch new M2 Macs during Spring, M1 Pro & M1 Max Macs in Summer this year

Apple will launch new Macs during Spring and Summer events this year, as per the latest edition of Mark Gurman’s newsletter. The majority of information in the newsletter is already well-known thanks to Gurman’s previous newsletters and other sources, however, it gives us a chance to summarize the roadmap for Apple in 2022.

2022 13-inch MacBook Pro and Mac mini

The new M2 chip is expected to make its first appearance during the March event in new Mac mini and 13-inch MacBook Pro models. The Mac mini is expected to feature a new design, while the 13-inch MacBook Pro will be a lackluster update if rumors are to be believed. For those expecting a 13-inch variant of the new 14-inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro, they are in for a disappointment as Apple will be staying with the same old design.

The M2 chip will be faster than the current generation chips, but it is expected to be based on the same 5nm manufacturing process as the current M1 chips. The M2 chip will feature the same number of cores, however, graphics may see an improvement with a bump from 7-8 cores to 9-10 cores.

The M2 chip will also be used in other products that will launch throughout the year which include a 24-inch iMac and a redesigned MacBook Air.

Apple is expected to hold a Spring event during which it will announce the new M2 Macs as well as new iPad Air 5 with A15 Bionic chip and 5G, and a third-generation iPhone SE 3 with 5G

2022 iMac Pro and Mac Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips

Despite the introduction of the M2 chip, Apple will continue to use the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips for new products that have not been transitioned from Intel chips yet. These will include a new larger iMac Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, a new Mac mini, and an M1 Pro chip, as well as a new smaller Mac Pro with two or four M1 Max chips.

The smaller Mac Pro has been rumored for some time now and is expected to feature what has been called M1 Max Duo or M1 Max Quadro chip configurations.

Apple is expected to launch these new  M1 Pro and M1 Max Macs during a Summer event.
