A short demo video and embedded framework discovered in macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate have exposed the technical architecture of Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods, revealing dual 1-megapixel sensors, two distinct capture modes, and privacy controls that the company had not yet publicly announced. The accidental leak, contains the clearest evidence yet of how Visual Intelligence will function on wearable cameras, along with detailed code references to the hardware and software managing image capture.
Despite the finished demo video showing Siri responding to visual queries, Apple is still aiming for a release in 2027. Supply chain challenges and the need for an intelligence-enhanced version of Siri have pushed the product past its original 2026 launch window.
The embedded macOS video displayed a man wearing AirPods asking Siri to remember a book he is looking at. Siri’s voice-over states: “With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable. See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later.” The earbuds themselves appear nearly identical to current AirPods Pro, with the primary visible difference being a noticeably thicker stem that presumably houses the camera hardware. The actual camera sensors are not visible in the footage.

Each AirPod has one color camera capable of 1 megapixel capture
Each AirPod contains one color camera capable of capturing up to 1 megapixel of image data. The two cameras work in synchronized pairs to produce stereo image input for Visual Intelligence processing. Apple has assigned these devices two internal codenames reflecting different development stages:
- B790: Modified AirPods Pro 3 variant with sensors and AI processing
- B798: New-generation AirPods Pro designed from the ground up for cameras
Active mode captures 640×640 internally, returns 1024×1024 output
The cameras operate in two distinct modes with different resolution profiles. In active mode, triggered by deliberate user action (likely a Siri request), the AirPods capture a 640×640 internal image and return a processed 1024×1024 output frame to the system, approximately 0.4 megapixels of sampled data expanded to just over 1 megapixel in the final frame. Passive mode, used for continuous environmental awareness, captures 320×320 images that can be returned as either 320×320 or 512×512 output.
This tiered approach balances real-time context awareness with battery efficiency while preserving on-device processing. The framework specifically references a feature called “peripheral inference,” which detects whether any person is in the camera’s field of view.
AccessorySensorManager framework controls image capture on Mac
Code discovered in macOS Tahoe 26.7 reveals a new framework called AccessorySensorManager, responsible for handling sensor data from the AirPods when connected to a Mac. A related framework, AccessorySensorMgrd, will control image capture and other camera functions. Internally, Apple refers to the camera sensor as the “Kino Sensor,” suggesting deliberate branding within its development organization.
The code also includes references to remotely controlling a hardware privacy indicator and its brightness level, indicating that the AirPods is expected to feature a physical camera privacy light similar to those found on professional cameras and some laptop webcams.
Visual Intelligence processes still frames, not video
The cameras feed still frames to Visual Intelligence for processing rather than recording continuous video or taking user-facing photos. The system is designed to recognize objects, text, and scenes in the wearer’s environment and answer Siri queries about what they are seeing in real time. Since the AirPods feed data to Siri, they will require an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence to function.
Localization strings discovered in the code include setup instructions and warnings about environmental obstruction. If hair covers the AirPods, users will receive an alert stating: “To get the most accurate information about things in your environment, make sure AirPods are not covered.” This suggests Apple expects the devices to be worn at ear level consistently for reliable operation. The framework confirms that the camera AirPods will not be able to take photos or videos. Their sole purpose is environmental scanning to provide context to Siri and other on-device AI tools.
Release delayed to 2027 after multiple timeline shifts
The expected launch date on these AirPods has shifted multiple times over the past four months. In May 2026, it was reported that they were in advanced testing with mass production beginning soon. In June, it was stated they had been delayed until late 2027. In early August, a September 2026 launch was again rumored but in the latest reports, following the macOS leak, it has been confirmed that they remain on track for 2027.
Apple originally planned to release camera AirPods in the first half of 2026 but delayed the launch until a more capable version of Siri powered by on-device AI was ready. The supply chain challenges keeping the product out of 2026 have not been publicly detailed, but Mark Gurman suggests the AirPods could potentially launch alongside a 20th-anniversary iPhone model in 2027.
