ChatGPT mobile gets remote Codex controls

OpenAI has expanded Codex support to the ChatGPT mobile app, letting developers remotely manage coding tasks from iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. The update connects the ChatGPT app to Codex sessions running on a Mac or remote development environment, making it possible to monitor projects and approve actions without sitting at a desktop.

The feature reflects OpenAI’s broader push to make Codex more accessible across devices. Instead of returning to a computer every time Codex needs approval or finishes a task, users can now manage those interactions directly from their phone in real time.

Codex still runs locally on the connected Mac or remote environment, but the ChatGPT app now works as a live control center for active sessions. Users can review outputs, approve commands, switch between models, continue existing threads, and start entirely new tasks from their mobile device.

OpenAI says screenshots, terminal output, diffs, test results, and approval requests are streamed back to the phone live while files, credentials, permissions, and local configurations remain on the host machine. That setup keeps sensitive project data stored locally instead of transferring everything through the cloud.

Getting started requires the latest versions of the Codex Mac app and the ChatGPT app on iPhone, iPad, or Android. Once updated, the Mac app displays a QR code that users scan through the ChatGPT app to pair their devices.

OpenAI says the mobile experience goes beyond basic remote access by allowing users to move between active threads, approvals, plugins, and project contexts directly from their phone. Developers can continue long-running coding tasks while away from their desk without interrupting workflows running on the connected machine.

The update follows several recent Codex expansions, including browser integrations, background app control on macOS, and subscription options designed for developers. OpenAI also confirmed that support for remotely controlling Codex on Windows is coming later.
